O.K. I know you all like to read my blogs about our wonderful landscapes, delicious food, and deeply rooted traditions, but sometimes we have to deal with some of the less pleasant realities of life. What happens, for example, if you\u2019re on holiday in Italy and you have mal di denti<\/strong>? = tooth ache?<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t worry, here is Serena and Geoff\u2019s guide to dealing with Italian dentists, inspired by Geoff\u2019s recent visita dal dentista<\/strong> = visit to the dentist.<\/p>\n

Firstly note that dentista<\/strong> is one of those words that doesn\u2019t change its ending according to gender. We simply change the article to denote whether it\u2019s a male or female dentist: il dentista<\/strong> (male) la dentista<\/strong> (female).<\/p>\n

Now, what does a dentist look after? I denti<\/strong> = the teeth (singular il dente<\/strong> = the tooth). Yes, simpler than English: denti<\/strong> = teeth therefore dentista<\/strong> = \u2018toother\u2019.<\/p>\n

So, let\u2019s have a look at a bit of dental vocabulary taking Geoff\u2019s experience as a starting point:<\/p>\n

ieri Geoff aveva l\u2019appuntamento dal dentista<\/strong><\/p>\n

yesterday Geoff had an appointment with the dentist<\/p>\n

qualche giorno fa, mentre faceva colazione, ha sentito un fortissimo dolore ad un dente<\/strong><\/p>\n

a few days ago, while he was having breakfast, he felt a really strong pain in one of his teeth<\/p>\n

una vecchia otturazione si era rotta, e il nervo del dente gli faceva cos\u00ec male che ha dovuto prendere degli analgesici<\/strong><\/p>\n

an old filling had broken, and the nerve hurt him so much that he had to take pain killers<\/p>\n

all\u2019ambulatorio, il dentista lo ha invitato ad accomodarsi sulla sedia reclinabile e ad aprire bene la bocca<\/strong><\/p>\n

at the surgery, the dentist invited him to sit in the reclining chair and open his mouth wide<\/p>\n

poi gli ha chiesto dove gli faceva male mentre con uno strumento gli toccava gentilmente i denti<\/strong><\/p>\n

he then asked him where it hurt whilst gentle tapping his teeth with a surgical instrument<\/p>\n

nel frattempo l\u2019infermiera ha messo la radiografia, detta comunemente la lastra, sul light-box<\/strong><\/p>\n

in the meanwhile the nurse put the x-rays, commonly known as \u2018the plate\u2019, on the light box<\/p>\n

individuato il dente colpevole, il dentista ha cominciato a prepararlo col trapano<\/strong><\/p>\n

once the guilty tooth had been identified, the dentist began preparing it with his drill<\/p>\n

ha deciso che in questo caso non c\u2019era bisogno di fare l\u2019anestesia<\/strong><\/p>\n

he decided that in this case it wouldn’t be necessary to anaesthetise him <\/p>\n

pulito il dente, ha chiesto all\u2019infermiera la matrice, e di preparare l\u2019amalgama<\/strong><\/p>\n

once the tooth was cleaned, he asked the nurse for the matrix (that thingy that they fit on your tooth when they do a filling), and to prepare the amalgam<\/p>\n

siccome non aveva dato a Geoff l\u2019anestetico, quando gli ha messo la matrice gli ha fatto un po\u2019 male alla gengiva<\/strong><\/p>\n

as he hadn\u2019t given Geoff an anaesthetic it hurt his gum a bit when he fitted the matrix<\/p>\n

ha usato l\u2019amalgama per fare la nuova otturazione<\/strong><\/p>\n

he used the amalgam to do the new filling<\/p>\n

poi ha chiesto a Geoff di mordere una striscia di carta impregnata con inchiostro blu per controllare il contatto fra i denti <\/strong><\/p>\n

then he asked Geoff to bite on a strip of paper impregnated with blue ink in order to check the contact between his teeth<\/p>\n

infine lo ha invitato a sciacquarsi la bocca<\/strong><\/p>\n

finally he asked him to rinse his mouth<\/p>\n

e adesso la cosa pi\u00f9 dolorosa: pagare la parcella!<\/strong><\/p>\n

and now for the most painful bit: pay the bill!<\/p>\n
