… \u00e8 sempre la stessa storia<\/strong> = it\u2019s always the same old story … study, study, study! Yes my friends, but it’s worth it in the end! So, without further ado, here’s something else for you to study: how do we say ‘the same’ in Italian?
\nWell, there are three main ways:<\/p>\n

1. stesso\/i\/a\/e:<\/span><\/strong><\/span> the most common adjective used to express the meaning of \u2018the same\u2019. Here are some examples of how to use it:
\nsiamo arrivati allo stesso tempo<\/strong> = we arrived at the same time
\nprotezione dell\u2019ambiente e progresso economico non si possono affrontare separatamente, sono due facce della stessa medaglia<\/strong> = environmental protection and economical progress cannot be dealt separately, they are two sides of the same coin
\n\u00e8 sempre la stessa storia: ogni nuovo governo aumenta le tasse<\/strong> = it\u2019s the same old story: every new government increases the taxes
\ncontinui a fare gli stessi errori tutte le volte<\/strong> = you keep making the same mistakes every time
\nalla cena c\u2019erano le stesse persone di sempre<\/strong> = at dinner there were the same people as usual<\/p>\n

2. uguale\/i:<\/span><\/strong> means equal, like, identical, and \u2018the same\u2019. Let\u2019s have a look at how we use it:
\nla legge \u00e8 uguale per tutti<\/strong> = the law is the same for everybody
\nche tu metta la fetta di limone nella tazza prima o dopo aver versato il t\u00e8, il risultato \u00e8 sempre uguale<\/strong> = whether you put the slice of lemon in the cup before or after pouring the tea, the result is always the same
\nqueste due camicie sono uguali<\/strong> = these two shirts are the same
\nGiorgio ha comprato due cravatte di uguale colore<\/strong> = Giorgio bought two ties of the same colour
\nquesti due vestiti costano uguale<\/strong> = these two dresses cost the same<\/p>\n

N.B.<\/span><\/strong> When we are asked to make a choice, we can use either the expression \u00e8 lo stesso<\/strong> or \u00e8 uguale<\/strong>, = ‘I don’t mind’ (literally: ‘it\u2019s all the same’)<\/em>, e.g. In gelateria, <\/em>Mario: \u201cChe gusto preferisci, cioccolato o caff\u00e8?\u201d Giulia: \u201cE\u2019 lo stesso\/\u00e8 uguale, scegli tu\u201d<\/strong> = at the ice cream parlour, <\/em>Mario: \u201cWhich flavour do you prefer, chocolate or coffee?\u201d Giulia: \u201cIt\u2019s all the same, you choose\u201d<\/p>\n

3. medesimo\/a\/i\/e:<\/span><\/strong> is more commonly used in written rather than in spoken Italian, but you will occasionally hear people using it. Here are some examples of how we use it:
\nsiamo tornati nel medesimo albergo dell\u2019anno scorso perch\u00e9 ci eravamo trovati molto bene<\/strong> = we went back to the same hotel as last year because we liked it a lot
\nabbiamo avuto la medesima idea<\/strong> = we\u2019ve had the same idea
\ncontinui a fare i medesimi errori tutte le volte<\/strong> = you keep making the same mistakes every time
\nMario racconta sempre le medesime barzellette<\/strong> = Mario always tells the same jokes<\/p>\n
