Following on from last week\u2019s article Italian False Friends<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, and taking into account the contributions made by you in your comments,\u00a0we\u2019re going to take a look at a few more common false cognitives.<\/p>\n

Common False Friends:<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Il lupo travestito da pecora = The wolf in sheep’s clothing
<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

argomento<\/strong> can be mistaken for \u2018argument\u2019 but actually means \u2018topic\u2019, e.g. stamattina il maestro ci ha introdotto un argomento molto interessante \u2026 il sesso!<\/strong>\u00a0(this morning the teacher introduced us to a very interesting topic \u2026 sex!)<\/p>\n

assistere\u00a0<\/strong>can be mistaken for \u2018to assist\u2019 but usually means \u2018to attend\u2019 or \u2018to be present at\u2019 e.g. ieri abbiamo assistito ad un bello spettacolo al teatro<\/strong> (yesterday we attended a great show at the theatre). In some cases it also means \u2018to assist\/help\u2019 e.g. assistere un povero<\/strong> (to help a poor person), assistere un malato<\/strong> (to assist an ill person)<\/p>\n

comprensivo<\/strong> can be mistaken for \u2018comprehensive\u2019 but actually means \u2018understanding\u2019, e.g. Marco \u00e8 un ragazzo molto comprensivo<\/strong> (Marco is a very understanding guy)<\/p>\n

confrontare<\/strong> can be mistaken for \u2018to confront\u2019 but actually means \u2018to compare\u2019, e.g. devo confrontare queste due stampanti per capire qual \u00e8 la migliore<\/strong> (I need to compare these two printers in order to understand which is better)<\/p>\n

educato<\/strong> can be mistaken for \u2018educated\u2019 but actually means \u2018polite\/well mannered\u2019, e.g. Federico \u00e8 stato molto educato<\/strong> (Federico was very polite). Hence maleducato<\/strong> means \u2018rude\/impolite\/badly mannered\u2019, per\u00f2 sua sorella\u00a0\u00e8 stata un po\u2019 maleducata<\/strong> (however, his sister was a bit rude)<\/p>\n

fabbrica<\/strong> can be mistaken for \u2018fabric\u2019 but actually means \u2018factory\u2019, e.g. ho lavorato nella stessa fabbrica per quindici anni<\/strong> (I\u2019ve worked at the same factory for fifteen years)<\/p>\n
