{"id":10535,"date":"2015-12-04T12:00:05","date_gmt":"2015-12-04T11:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/?p=10535"},"modified":"2015-12-03T12:06:16","modified_gmt":"2015-12-03T11:06:16","slug":"timeless-emigrants-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/timeless-emigrants-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Timeless Emigrants \u2013 Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\">As promised in my last post, here is Part 2 of Edmondo De Amicis&#8217; poem <span style=\"color: #000080\"><a style=\"color: #000080\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/timeless-emigrants-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Gli Emigranti<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (The Emigrants).<br \/>\nIn the first half of the poem De Amicis describes the emotions of the emigrants as they board the ship which will carry them away into the unknown: the desperate men, women and children, clutching onto their humble bundles of belongings.<br \/>\nIn this second part the poet portrays both the feelings of the emigrants aboard the ship and the desolation of their relatives left behind upon the shore with only the hope that maybe one day their loved ones will return home again.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10549\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/12\/Emigranti.-Addio-Italia-romanzo-di-Gianni-Favarato-sugli-italiani-in-Brasile-001.jpg\" aria-label=\"Emigranti. In men d\u2019un anno<br \/>\nrosi dalla miseria e dall\u2019affanno,<br \/>\nforse morrete l\u00e0 senza compianto,<br \/>\ne i figli nol sapranno,<br \/>\ne andrete ignudi e soli al camposanto.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\">Farewell, poor old ones! In less than a year<br \/>\neaten by poverty and hardship,<br \/>\nperhaps you\u2019ll die there with no one to mourn you,<br \/>\nand your children won\u2019t know it,<br \/>\nand you\u2019ll go to the cemetery naked and lonely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\">Poveri vecchi, addio! Forse a quest\u2019ora<br \/>\ndai muti clivi che il tramonto indora<br \/>\nla man levate i figli a benedire&#8230;.<br \/>\nBenediteli ancora:<br \/>\ntutti vanno a soffrir, molti a morire.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\">Poor old ones, farewell! Maybe in this moment<br \/>\nfrom the silent hills bathed in gold by the setting sun<br \/>\nyou\u2019re lifting your hand to bless your children \u2026<br \/>\nBless them once more:<br \/>\nall heading towards suffering, many to die.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\">Ecco il naviglio maestoso e lento<br \/>\nsalpa, Genova gira, alita il vento.<br \/>\nSul vago lido si distende un velo,<br \/>\ne il drappello sgomento<br \/>\nsolleva un grido desolato al cielo.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\">Here, the ship, majestic and slow,<br \/>\nis sailing, Genoa swings away, the wind blows.<br \/>\nA veil spreads over the faint shore,<br \/>\nand the dismayed troops<br \/>\nlift a cry to the desolate sky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\">Chi al lido che dispar tende le braccia,<br \/>\nchi nell\u2019involto suo china la faccia,<br \/>\nchi versando un\u2019amara onda dagli occhi<br \/>\nla sua compagna abbraccia,<br \/>\nchi supplicando Iddio piega i ginocchi.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\">Some stretch their arms towards the disappearing shore,<br \/>\nsome bend their faces down into their bundle,<br \/>\nsome, crying bitter tears from their eyes,<br \/>\nhug their companion,<br \/>\nsome bend their knees begging to God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\">E il naviglio s\u2019affretta, e il giorno muore,<br \/>\ne un suon di pianti e d\u2019urli di dolore<br \/>\nvagamente confuso al suon dell\u2019onda<br \/>\nviene a morir nel core<br \/>\nde la folla che guarda da la sponda.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\">And the ship speeds up, and the day dies,<br \/>\nand the sound of cries and shouts of pain<br \/>\nvaguely confused with the sound of the waves<br \/>\nbegins to fade in the hearts<br \/>\nof the crowd that watches from the shore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\">Addio, fratelli! Addio, turba dolente!<br \/>\nVi sia pietoso il cielo e il mar clemente,<br \/>\nv\u2019allieti il sole il misero viaggio.<br \/>\nAddio, povera gente,<br \/>\ndatevi pace e fatevi coraggio.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\">Farewell, brothers!
