A reader recently commented on my blog Italian Sexual Euphemisms<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI would love to see a post about words to describe the less graphic interactions between men and women.\u00a0 I\u2019m particularly confused about how to say \u2018girlfriend\u2019, as distinguished from \u2018friend who is a girl.\u2019 Same with boyfriend. I\u2019m sure there is a lot of subtlety, and you are masters of that!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Well, here it is!<\/p>\n

Just Good Friends<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

We call our friends amico<\/strong>, amici<\/strong>, amica\u00a0<\/strong>or amiche<\/strong> depending on number and gender. Let\u2019s have a look at this\u00a0in a bit more detail, shall we?<\/p>\n

amico<\/strong> = friend – masculine<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

oggi vado a La Spezia a trovare il mio amico Omar<\/strong> = today I\u2019m going to La Spezia to see my friend Omar
\ncome si chiama quell\u2019<\/em>amico di Flavio che abita a Molinello?<\/strong> = what\u2019s the name of that friend of Flavio who lives in Molinello?
\nieri ho incontrato per caso un mio vecchio amico <\/strong>= yesterday, by chance, I bumped into\u00a0an old friend of mine<\/p>\n

amica<\/strong> = friend – feminine<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

ti voglio far conoscere una mia amica che abita a Roma<\/strong> = I want you to meet a friend of mine who lives in Rome
\nAnna \u00e8 la migliore amica\u00a0di Clara<\/strong> = Anna is Clara\u2019s best friend<\/p>\n

amici<\/strong> = friends\u00a0 – masculine<\/em>, also used for generic mixed masculine\/feminine groups<\/span><\/p>\n

questi sono i miei amici Claudio e Sergio<\/strong> = these are my friends Claudio and Sergio
\nnon ho molti amici qua in zona<\/strong> = I don\u2019t have many friends in this area
\nla maggior parte dei miei amici abitano all\u2019estero<\/strong> = most of my friends live abroad<\/p>\n

amiche<\/strong> = friends – feminine<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

chi sono quelle due amiche di Anna?<\/strong> = who are those two (female) friends of Anna?
\nMaria Grazia e Alda sono amiche dall\u2019infanzia<\/strong> = Maria Grazia and Alda have been friends since they were children<\/p>\n

amico\/amica del cuore<\/strong> = best friend<\/span><\/p>\n

Serena \u00e8 la mia amica del cuore<\/strong> = Serena is my best friend<\/p>\n

More than just friends<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

We use several different terms for boyfriend and girlfriend, the most common being:<\/p>\n

ragazzo<\/strong> = boyfriend<\/span><\/p>\n

Il ragazzo di Maddalena si chiama Franco<\/strong> = Maddalena\u2019s boyfriend is called Franco
\nti presento Giorgio, il mio ragazzo<\/strong> = this is Giorgio, my boyfriend<\/p>\n

ragazza<\/strong> = girlfriend<\/span><\/p>\n

hai visto quanto \u00e8 bella la ragazza di Franco?<\/strong> = have you seen how beautiful Franco\u2019s girlfriend is?
\nGiorgio si \u00e8 lasciato con la sua ragazza<\/strong> = Giorgio has split up with his girlfriend<\/p>\n

then we have:<\/p>\n

moroso<\/strong> = boyfriend<\/span><\/p>\n

questo \u00e8 il moroso di Maria<\/strong> = this is Maria\u2019s boyfriend<\/p>\n

morosa<\/strong> = girlfriend<\/span><\/p>\n

questa \u00e8 la morosa di Paolo<\/strong> = this is Paolo\u2019s girlfriend<\/p>\n

fidanzato<\/strong> = boyfriend<\/span><\/p>\n

conosci il suo fidanzato?<\/strong> = do you know her boyfriend?<\/p>\n

fidanzata<\/strong> = girlfriend<\/span><\/p>\n

come si chiama\u00a0la fidanzata di Giovanni?<\/strong> = what\u2019s Giovanni\u2019s girlfriend\u2019s name<\/p>\n

N.B. although fidanzato<\/strong> and fidanzata<\/strong> officially mean fianc\u00e9\/fianc\u00e9e they are commonly used to mean simply boyfriend\/girlfriend
\nFor a mature couple in a long term relationship but not married we use compagno\/compagna<\/strong> = companion <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
