{"id":10731,"date":"2016-01-04T20:51:19","date_gmt":"2016-01-04T19:51:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/?p=10731"},"modified":"2016-01-04T20:51:19","modified_gmt":"2016-01-04T19:51:19","slug":"foggy-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/foggy-italy\/","title":{"rendered":"Foggy Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\">We wanted to begin 2016 with some music:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\"><strong>&#8220;Forse troviamo una bella canzone su gennaio&#8221;<\/strong> (perhaps we&#8217;ll find a nice song about January)&#8221; said Serena &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\"><strong>&#8220;Hmmmm, vedremo&#8221;<\/strong> ( Hmmmm, we&#8217;ll see) I replied sceptically<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\">30 minutes of fruitless searching pass &#8230; my scepticism has, unfortunately, been justified. Italian songs with the word <strong>gennaio<\/strong> in them certainly do exist but just as I had predicted, they revolve around the perennial central theme of <strong>amore\/cuore, cuore\/amore<\/strong>. You get the idea: <strong>&#8220;ho trovato l&#8217;amore in gennaio la la la &#8230; mi hai spaccato il cuore in gennaio la la la &#8230; ho perso la mia morosa in gennaio &#8230; ma vaffan####<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\"><strong>&#8220;Vabb\u00e9, ricominciamo da zero&#8221;<\/strong> (Okay, let&#8217;s start again from scratch) I suggested <strong>&#8220;lasciamo perdere questa idea di gennaio &#8230; guardiamo fuori dalla finestra che magari qualcosa ci d\u00e0 un&#8217;ispirazione.&#8221;<\/strong> (Forget about this January idea, let&#8217;s look out of the window and maybe something will give us some inspiration)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\">We turn and look through the window in search of new ideas, and see &#8230; nothing! A dense fog has come down and erased the outside world. We may as well be floating in a hot air balloon above the Himalayas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\"><strong>&#8220;Ecco l&#8217;ispirazione!&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>(There&#8217;s the inspiration!) I say<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\"><strong>&#8220;Dove?&#8221;<\/strong> (Where?) replies Serena<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\"><strong>&#8220;La nebbia &#8230; vedrai che troviamo una canzone interessante sulla nebbia in Italia&#8221;<\/strong> (The fog &#8230; just wait and see, we&#8217;ll find an interesting song about the fog in Italy)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\">And so it came to pass that the blank canvas enclosing our little village in its vaporous hands led us to a song.<br \/>\nThis is that song: <strong>Il Fiume e La Nebbia<\/strong> (The River and The Fog) written by <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daniele_Silvestri\" target=\"_blank\">Daniele Silvestri<\/a><\/span> and released as a single by <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fiorella_Mannoia\" target=\"_blank\">Fiorella Mannoia<\/a><\/span> in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/youtu.be\/wr7mgJSWux8<\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\"><strong>Qui non \u00e8 successo niente\r\ne non credo cambier\u00e0\r\ne non \u00e8 colpa della gente\r\n\u00e8 il cielo grigio che c'\u00e8 qua<\/strong> \r\n\r\nNothing has happened here\r\nand I don't think that will change\r\nand it's not the people's fault\r\nit's the grey sky that's here\r\n\r\n<strong>\u00e8 questa nebbia che confonde\r\ne che ci inghiotte sempre un po'\r\ne con amore ci nasconde\r\nin una parola \u00e8 il Po<\/strong>\r\n\r\nit's this fog that confuses\r\nand always swallows us up a little\r\nand hides us with love \r\nin a word, it's the Po\r\n\r\n<strong>E' per colpa di quel fiume se io sono ancora qui\r\nperch\u00e9 un giorno c'era un ponte che univa gli argini\r\nmentre adesso questo fiume in fondo \u00e8 tutto ci\u00f2 che ho\r\ne tra diecimila anni \u00e8 sempre qui che aspetter\u00f2<\/strong>\r\n\r\nIt's the river\u2019s fault that I'm still here\r\nbecause one day there was a bridge which linked the banks\r\nbut now this river is all I have in the end\r\nand in ten thousand years time I\u2019ll still be waiting here<\/span><\/pre>\n<pre><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: medium\"><strong>Perch\u00e9 in fondo il mare ha un lato\r\nun solo lungo lato blu\r\ne anche lo sguardo pi\u00f9 allenato\r\nnon pu\u00f2 vederne mai di pi\u00f9<\/strong>\r\n\r\nBecause, after all, the sea has one side\r\njust one long blue side\r\nand even the keenest gaze\r\ncan never see more than that\r\n\r\n<strong>mentre chi vive accanto a un fiume\r\nanche se \u00e8 grande come qui\r\nvede benissimo il confine\r\ne non pu\u00f2 credere ai miracoli<\/strong>\r\n\r\nbut those who live beside a river\r\neven if it's as big as this one here\r\ncan easily see the edge\r\nand can\u2019t believe in miracles\r\n\r\n<strong>E' per colpa di quel fiume se io sono ancora qua\r\nperch\u00e9 un giorno su quel ponte mi fermai a met\u00e0\r\ne quest'aria che mi opprime in fondo \u00e8 tutto ci\u00f2 che ho\r\nfino a quando l'altro lato dei miei sogni trover\u00f2<\/strong>     \r\n\r\nIt's the river\u2019s fault that I'm still here \r\nbecause one day I stopped in the middle of that bridge \r\nand this air that suffocates me is all I have in the end\r\nuntil I find the other side of my dreams\r\n\r\n<strong>Qui non \u00e8 successo niente\r\ne non credo cambier\u00e0\r\ncome quest'acqua tra le sponde\r\nnon si ferma, ma in realt\u00e0<\/strong>\r\n\r\nNothing has happened here\r\nand I don't think that will change\r\nlike this water in between the banks\r\ndoesn't stop, but in reality\r\n\r\n<strong>non ha mai cambiato il senso\r\ne del resto come pu\u00f2\r\na quel mare io ci penso\r\nma mi fa paura... un po'\r\nun po'<\/strong>\r\n\r\nit has never changed its direction\r\nand besides how could it\r\nI think about that sea\r\nbut it scares me ... a bit\r\na bit<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/pre>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #808080\">Think of <strong>la nebbia<\/strong> (fog) here in Italy and you automatically think of <strong>la Pianura Padana<\/strong>, the vast agricultural plain in the north of Italy traversed by the river Po, and enclosed by mountains to the North, West, and South.
