Here\u2019s an opportunity for you to practice your colloquial conversational vocabulary. A typical Geoff and Serena dialogue (with the arguments edited out of course!)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Serena: Stasera c\u2019\u00e8 il fal\u00f2 di San Nicol\u00f2 a Pontremoli, lo sapevi?
\n<\/strong>Serena: did you know that this evening in Pontremoli there\u2019s the fal\u00f2 of San Nicol\u00f2?<\/p>\n

Geoff: che cavolo \u00e8 Il fal\u00f2 di San Nicol\u00f2?
\n<\/strong>Geoff: what on earth is the Fal\u00f2 of San Nicol\u00f2?<\/p>\n

Serena: un fal\u00f2 \u00e8 un fuoco enorme, una pira. Questo \u00e8 organizzato dalla contrada di San Nicol\u00f2
\n<\/strong>Serena:\u00a0a fal\u00f2 is a huge fire, a pyre. This one is organized by the San Nicol\u00f2 quarter<\/p>\n

Geoff: okay, adesso ho capito, tipo quello che abbiamo visto qualche anno fa vicino al fiume Verde
\n<\/strong>Geoff: okay, now I understand, like the one that we saw a few years ago near the river Verde<\/p>\n

\nSerena: yes, it\u2019ll be better because it’ll be chock full<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>Geoff: what on earth is that noise? It\u2019s like being at the stadium before a football match<\/p>\n

Geoff: ma che diavolo cantano? non sento bene le parole
\n<\/strong>Geoff: but what the devil are they chanting? I can\u2019t hear the words very well<\/p>\n

Serena: se non sbaglio va cos\u00ec: <\/strong>\u201cl\u00f2 l\u00f2 l\u00f2, evviva San Nicol\u00f2, evviva il Vaticano, abbasso San Geminiano\u201d
\n<\/strong><\/em>Serena: if I\u2019m not mistaken it goes like this: \u201cl\u00f2 l\u00f2 l\u00f2, long live San Nicol\u00f2, long live il Vaticano, down with San Geminiano\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Geoff: ah s\u00ec, adesso\u00a0mi ricordo, San Geminiano \u00e8 la contrada rivale che fanno anche loro un fal\u00f2 in questo periodo, no?
\n<\/strong>Geoff: oh yes, now I remember, San Geminiano is the rival quarter who also have a bonfire around this time,right?<\/p>\n

Serena: s\u00ec, fra due settimane ne faranno uno anche loro
\n<\/strong>Serena: yes, in a couple of weeks they\u2019ll have one as well<\/p>\n

Geoff: c\u2019\u00e8 un bel po\u2019 di gente! Mi sa che non sar\u00e0 mica facile per te che sei bassina. Vediamo se troviamo posto davanti altrimenti non vedi nulla
\n<\/strong>Geoff: there are quite a few people! I think it won’t be easy for you being short. Let\u2019s see if we can find a place in front or you won\u2019t see anything<\/p>\n

Serena: l\u00ec, vicino a quei ragazzini c\u2019\u00e8 un piccolo spazio
\n<\/strong>Serena: there, close to those children, there\u2019s a small space<\/p>\n

\u2026 la folla \u00e8 fitta ed eccitata, tutti vogliono avvicinarsi alla ringhiera per vedere meglio \u2026:
\n<\/strong>the crowd is densely packed and excited, everyone wants to get close to the railing to see better\u2026:<\/em><\/p>\n

Geoff: spero che sia forte quella ringhiera, speriamo che resista!
\n<\/strong>Geoff: I hope the railing’s strong, let\u2019s hope it holds up!<\/p>\n

Serena: speriamo davvero!
