The verb intendere<\/strong> has two main meanings. The first is fairly obvious as it closely resembles its English counterpart, ‘to intend\/mean’. Let\u2019s\u00a0have a look at\u00a0a few simple examples of this first meaning:<\/p>\n

Intendere<\/strong> = to intend\/mean<\/span><\/p>\n

scusi, non intendevo offenderla<\/strong> = sorry, I didn\u2019t mean to offend you (formal<\/em>)
\nintendo andare a Lucca gioved\u00ec<\/strong> = I intend to go to Lucca on Thursday
\ne Giorgio, cosa intende fare?<\/strong> = and Giorgio, what does he intend to do?<\/p>\n

Instead of the verb intendere<\/strong>, we very often use the expression avere intenzione di<\/strong>\u00a0(literally: to have intention to<\/em>). Here are some examples:<\/p>\n

scusi, non avevo intenzione di offenderla<\/strong> = sorry, I didn\u2019t intend to offend you (formal<\/em>)
\nho intenzione di andare a Lucca gioved\u00ec<\/strong> = I intend to go to Lucca on Thursday
\ncosa ha intenzione di fare Giorgio?<\/strong> = what does Giorgio mean to do?<\/p>\n

The second main translation of intendere<\/strong> is ‘to understand’, here are a few examples:<\/p>\n

Intendere<\/strong> = to understand<\/span><\/p>\n

non so se mi hai inteso<\/strong> = I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve understood me
\nscusi, avevo inteso un\u2019altra cosa<\/strong> = excuse me, I understood something else
\nmi sembra che tu abbia intenso male le mie parole<\/strong> = it seems to me that you\u2019ve misunderstood my words<\/p>\n

A common\u00a0alternative to the expression\u00a0intendere male<\/strong> (misunderstand – literally: understand badly<\/em>) is the verb fraintendere<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Fraintendere<\/strong> = to misunderstand<\/span><\/p>\n

mi sembra che tu abbia frainteso le mie parole<\/strong> = it seems to me that you\u2019ve misunderstood my words
\nnon voglio che lei mi fraintenda<\/strong> = I don\u2019t want you to misunderstand me (formal<\/em>)
\npurtroppo ci siamo fraintesi<\/strong> = unfortunately we\u2019ve misunderstood each other<\/p>\n

\n4. vi ho detto di lasciarmi in pace, mi _______?<\/strong> = I told you to leave me in peace, have you understood me?
\n5. non voglio che Franco _______ le mie intenzioni<\/strong> = I don\u2019t want Franco to misunderstand my intentions<\/p>\n

Translate the following sentences into Italian using the verb intendere<\/strong><\/p>\n
