In our previous post<\/a><\/span> we explored the verb intendere<\/strong>. Today we’re going to take a look at its reflexive partner intendersi<\/strong>. The verb intendersi <\/strong>has two main meanings: intendersi<\/strong> = ‘to come to an agreement about’, or ‘to clarify something’, and intendersi di<\/strong> = ‘to be knowledgeable about something’. Below are some everyday examples illustrating how to use this verb:<\/p>\n

Intendersi<\/strong> = to come to an agreement\/to clarify something<\/span><\/p>\n

ci siamo intesi sul prezzo definitivo<\/strong> = we agreed on the final price
\noccorre intendersi sulle regole di base<\/strong> = we have to be clear about the ground rules
\n“non che fosse un ragazzo cattivo, intendiamoci; era solo un mascalzone”<\/strong> = “Let’s be clear, h<\/span>e wasn’t an evil kid<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>he was just a scoundrel<\/span>“<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Related to intendersi<\/strong> is the feminine noun un’intesa<\/strong> = an agreement, e.g.<\/p>\n

\u00e8 mancata l\u2019intesa fra i partiti<\/strong> = the agreement amongst the parties didn’t take place
\ni sindicati hanno raggiunto un\u2019intesa col governo<\/strong> = the unions have reached an agreement with the government
\ni rapinatori hanno agito d\u2019intesa con la guardia<\/strong> = the robbers acted in agreement (conspired) with the guard<\/p>\n

Intendersi di<\/strong> = to be knowledgeable about\/to be proficient in
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Giorgio si intende di vini<\/strong> = Giorgio is knowledgeable about wines
\nnon lo chiedere a me, io proprio non me ne intendo<\/strong> = don\u2019t ask me, I really don\u2019t know anything about it
\nLeonardo da Vinci si intendeva sia di arte che di meccanica<\/strong> = Leonardo da Vinci was proficient both in art and in mechanics<\/p>\n

N.b. in the second example above, the ne<\/strong> <\/span>in io proprio non me ne<\/span> intendo<\/strong> means about it<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Related to intendersi<\/strong> di<\/strong> (to be knowledgeable about<\/em>) is the word intenditore<\/strong> (feminine: intenditrice<\/strong>) meaning connoisseur\/expert. For example:<\/p>\n

Giorgio \u00e8 un intenditore di vini<\/strong> = Giorgio is a wine connoisseur
\nnon lo chiedere a me, io non sono un\u2019intenditrice in questo campo <\/strong>= don\u2019t ask me, I\u2019m not an expert in this area
\npuoi fidarti del suo consiglio, lui \u00e8 un intenditore<\/strong> = you can trust his advice, he\u2019s an expert<\/p>\n

Try and complete the following sentences referring to the examples given above (n.b. some will have two possible solutions<\/em>)<\/p>\n

1. pensi che Lucia _______ di orchidee?<\/strong> = Do you think Lucia is knowledgeable about orchids?
\n2. chi di voi _______ di motori?<\/strong> = who amongst you is knowledgeable about engines?
\n3. finalmente _______ sulla modalit\u00e0 di pagamento<\/strong> = finally they reached an agreement on the payment mode
\n4. Maria \u00e8<\/strong> _______ di piante grasse <\/strong>= Maria is an expert on succulent plants
\n5. Mario e Bruno\u00a0_______<\/strong> = Mario and Bruno acted in agreement<\/p>\n

Translate the following sentences into Italian using the reflexive verb intendersi:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. do you know anything about sewing machines? _______ <\/strong>
\n2. do you know anybody who knows about printers? _______ <\/strong>
\n3. it wasn’t the best result, let’s be clear! _______
\n<\/strong>4. are we clear about the objective of this exercise?\u00a0_______ <\/strong>
