1. Using The Italian Verb Intendere:<\/span><\/p>\n

Have you ever gone beyond the kiss? Of course! Sometimes I’ve even tried a Ferrero Rocher (Bacio Perugina and Ferrero Rocher are both famous Italian chocolates)<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

You were asked to complete the following sentences referring to the examples given (n.b. some had two possible solutions<\/em>). Here are the answers<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Lucia ha frainteso\/inteso male<\/span> quello che ha detto Marco<\/strong> = Lucia misunderstood what Marco said
\n2. cosa intendi<\/span> fare questa fine settimana?<\/strong> = what do you intend to do this weekend?
\n3. hai intenzione<\/span> di finire quel lavoro entro oggi?<\/strong> = do you mean to finish that job by today?
\n4. vi ho detto di lasciarmi in pace, mi avete inteso<\/span>?<\/strong> = I told you to leave me in peace, have you understood me?
\n5. non voglio che Franco fraintenda\/intenda male<\/span> le mie intenzioni<\/strong> = I don\u2019t want Franco to misunderstand my intentions<\/p>\n

N.B. Intendere<\/strong> is followed by the infinitive<\/span>, hence the answer to number 2 is cosa intendi<\/span> fare<\/span><\/strong>. Avere intenzione<\/strong> is followed by the preposition di<\/strong><\/span>, hence the answer to number 3 is hai intenzione <\/span>di<\/span> finire<\/strong> …
\nIn number 5 the missing verb \u2018fraintenda\/intenda male<\/strong>\u2019 is conjugated in the present subjunctive because it follows the verb \u2018voglio<\/strong>\u2019 (I want). For more information see this post on the use of the Congiuntivo Presente<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

You were asked to translate the following sentences into Italian using the verb intendere<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. did you understand what the doctor said? = Hai inteso<\/span> ci\u00f2 che\/quello che ha detto il dottore?
\n<\/strong>2. I don\u2019t understand what you meant to say = Non capisco cosa intendevi<\/span> dire<\/strong>
\n3. what does Eugenia intend to do about her cat? = cosa intende<\/span> <\/strong>(\u2018ha intenzione di\u2019<\/span><\/strong>) fare Eugenia riguardo al suo gatto?
\n<\/strong>4. I didn\u2019t mean to upset her = Non intendevo<\/span> turbarla
\n<\/strong>5. I haven\u2019t understood the meaning of this blog = Non ho inteso<\/span> il significato di questo blog<\/strong> (speriamo di no!<\/strong> = let\u2019s hope not!)<\/p>\n

\n3. finalmente\u00a0si sono intesi<\/span>\u00a0sulla modalit\u00e0 di pagamento<\/strong> = finally they reached an agreement on the payment mode
\n4. Maria \u00e8<\/strong>\u00a0un\u2019intenditrice\/si intende<\/span>\u00a0di piante grasse <\/strong>= Maria is\u00a0an expert\u00a0on succulent plants
\n5. Mario e Bruno\u00a0hanno agito d\u2019intesa<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0= Mario and Bruno acted in agreement<\/p>\n

You were asked to translate the following sentences into Italian using the reflexive verb intendersi:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. do you know anything about sewing machines? = tu ti intendi<\/span> di macchine da cucire? <\/strong>
\n2. do you know anybody who knows about printers? = conosci qualcuno\u00a0che si intenda<\/span> di stampanti? <\/strong>
\n3. it wasn’t the best result, let’s be clear! = non \u00e8 stato il miglior risultato,\u00a0intendiamoci<\/span>!
