{"id":11259,"date":"2016-03-18T09:00:15","date_gmt":"2016-03-18T08:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/?p=11259"},"modified":"2016-03-17T11:32:49","modified_gmt":"2016-03-17T10:32:49","slug":"an-italian-poem-for-fathers-day-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/an-italian-poem-for-fathers-day-2\/","title":{"rendered":"An Italian Poem for Father&#8217;s Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Here in Italy, the 19th of March is <strong>La Festa del Pap\u00e0<\/strong> (Father\u2019s day).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Here&#8217;s a beautiful poem written by <strong>Camillo Sbarbaro<\/strong> (1888 &#8211; 1967) and published in 1914 in the collection <strong>Pianissimo<\/strong>. The poem takes its title from the first line: <em><strong>Padre, se anche tu non fossi il mio padre<\/strong> (Father, even if you weren&#8217;t my father)<\/em>. In these verses Camillo Sbarbaro recalls two childhood memories which reveal his father&#8217;s gentle, child-like nature.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11268\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption fossi a me un estraneo,<br \/>\nper te stesso, egualmente t&#8217;amerei.<br \/>\nCh\u00e9 mi ricordo d&#8217;un mattin d&#8217;inverno<br \/>\nche la prima viola sull&#8217;opposto<br \/>\nmuro scopristi dalla tua finestra<br \/>\ne ce ne desti la novella allegro.<br \/>\nPoi la scala di legno tolta in spalla<br \/>\ndi casa uscisti e l&#8217;appoggiasti al muro.<br \/>\nNoi piccoli stavamo wall opposite<br \/>\nand you merrily told us the news.<br \/>\nThen, wooden ladder hoisted upon your shoulder,<br \/>\nyou went out and propped it against the wall.<br \/>\nWe little ones stood at the window.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print\">E di quell&#8217;altra volta mi ricordo<br \/>\nche la sorella mia piccola ancora<br \/>\nper la casa inseguivi minacciando<br \/>\n(la caparbia avea fatto non so che).<br \/>\nMa raggiuntala che strillava forte<br \/>\ndalla paura, ti mancava il cuore:<br \/>\nch\u00e9 avevi visto te inseguir la tua<br \/>\npiccola figlia e, tutta spaventata,<br \/>\ntu vacillante l&#8217;attiravi al petto<br \/>\ne con carezze dentro le tue braccia<br \/>\navviluppavi come per difenderla<br \/>\nda quel cattivo ch&#8217;era il tu di prima.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print\">And I remember that other time<br \/>\nwhen my sister was still little<br \/>\nyou chased her around the house, threatening her<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print\"><br \/>\n(that stubborn one had done I don&#8217;t know what.)<br \/>\nBut when you reached her, and she was screaming<br \/>\nloudly in fear, you didn&#8217;t have the heart:<br \/>\nbecause you had seen yourself chasing<br \/>\nyour little daughter, and you, unsteady<br \/>\npulled her, all scared, to your chest<br \/>\nand caressing her into your arms<br \/>\nyou wrapped her as if to defend her<br \/>\nfrom the evil one who was the you of before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print\">Padre, se anche tu non fossi il mio<br \/>\npadre, se anche fossi a
