Here in Italy, the 19th of March is La Festa del Pap\u00e0<\/strong> (Father\u2019s day).<\/p>\n

Here’s a beautiful poem written by Camillo Sbarbaro<\/strong> (1888 – 1967) and published in 1914 in the collection Pianissimo<\/strong>. The poem takes its title from the first line: Padre, se anche tu non fossi il mio padre<\/strong> (Father, even if you weren’t my father)<\/em>. In these verses Camillo Sbarbaro recalls two childhood memories which reveal his father’s gentle, child-like nature.<\/p>\n

Here’s the poem with our translation into English:<\/p>\n

Padre, se anche tu non fossi il mio
\npadre, se anche fossi a me un estraneo,
\nper te stesso, egualmente t’amerei.
\nCh\u00e9 mi ricordo d’un mattin d’inverno
\nche la prima viola sull’opposto
\nmuro scopristi dalla tua finestra
\ne ce ne desti la novella allegro.
\nPoi la scala di legno tolta in spalla
\ndi casa uscisti e l’appoggiasti al muro.
\nNoi piccoli stavamo alla finestra.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Father, even if you weren’t my
\nfather, even if you were a stranger to me,
\nI’d love you just the same for who you are.
\nBecause I remember a winter morning
\nwhen from your window you discovered
\nthe first violet on the wall opposite
\nand you merrily told us the news.
\nThen, wooden ladder hoisted upon your shoulder,
\nyou went out and propped it against the wall.
\nWe little ones stood at the window.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMa raggiuntala che strillava forte
\ndalla paura, ti mancava il cuore:

\ntu vacillante l’attiravi al petto
\ne con carezze dentro le tue braccia
\navviluppavi come per difenderla
\nda quel cattivo ch’era il tu di prima.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And I remember that other time
\nwhen my sister was still little
\nyou chased her around the house, threatening her<\/span>
\n(that stubborn one had done I don’t know what.)
\nBut when you reached her, and she was screaming
\nloudly in fear, you didn’t have the heart:
\nbecause you had seen yourself chasing
\nyour little daughter, and you, unsteady
\npulled her, all scared, to your chest
\nand caressing her into your arms
\nyou wrapped her as if to defend her
\nfrom the evil one who was the you of before.<\/span><\/p>\n
