Here\u2019s a little point of grammar that can easily trip up the unwary:<\/p>\n

In Italian, when we talk about things fitting, we usually use the form starci<\/b> (from the verb stare<\/b> = to be\/stay\/remain and ci<\/b> = there). Let\u2019s take a look at some examples:<\/p>\n

Mi puoi mettere questa valigia in bagagliaio? – Purtroppo <\/b>non ci sta<\/b><\/span>!<\/b>
\nCan you put this suitcase in the trunk? – Unfortunately it doesn\u2019t fit<\/span>!<\/p>\n

Ci sta<\/span> la verdura in frigo? – Non, non c\u2019\u00e8 spazio!<\/b>
\nWill the greens fit in<\/span> the fridge \u2013 No, there\u2019s no space!<\/p>\n

Non ti preoccupare, le scarpe ci stanno<\/span> facilmente tutte in quel armadio<\/b>
\nDon\u2019t worry, all the shoes will easily fit in<\/span> that wardrobe<\/p>\n

Venite con noi alla spiaggia? – Ma come ci stiamo<\/span> tutti e otto nella cinquecento?!<\/b>
\nAre you coming to the beach with us? – But how will all eight of us fit in<\/span> the cinquecento?! (FIAT 500<\/i>)<\/p>\n

So far so good!<\/p>\n

But then you find ourself in the negozio di calzature <\/b>(shoe shop<\/i>) trying on a pair of lovely Italian shoes and you want to say to the commessa<\/b> (shop assistant<\/i>): \u201cunfortunately these shoes don\u2019t fit\u201d. What would you say?<\/p>\n

Well, knowing the rule that stare<\/b> with ci<\/b> can mean \u2018to fit\u2019, it would seem logical to say something like \u201cpurtroppo queste scarpe non ci stanno\u201d<\/b>, or perhaps \u201cpurtroppo queste scarpe non mi stanno\u201d<\/b> (don\u2019t fit me<\/i>), wouldn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

But unfortunately, dear reader, in this particular case a different rule applies!<\/p>\n

Stare vs Andare When Talking About Clothing<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

stare<\/b> <\/span>(sta<\/b><\/span>\/stanno<\/b><\/span>) = to suit
\nandare<\/b> <\/span>(va<\/b><\/span>\/vanno<\/b><\/span>) = to fit<\/p>\n

So how do we say: \u201cunfortunately these shoes don\u2019t fit (me<\/i>)\u201d? Answer: \u201cPurtroppo queste scarpe non mi vanno<\/span>\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s see a few more examples:<\/p>\n

Come ti va<\/span> la giacca? – Mi va<\/span> benissimo!<\/b>
\nHow does the jacket fit you? It fits me really well!<\/p>\n

Cosa pensi, mi vanno<\/span> questi pantaloni? No, sono troppo larghi sul sedere<\/b>
\nWhat do you think, do these trousers fit me? No they\u2019re too baggy on your bottom<\/p>\n

Now let\u2019s see what happens when we rewrite the above examples using the verb stare<\/b> instead of andare<\/b>:<\/p>\n

Cosa pensi, mi stanno<\/span> questi pantaloni? No sono troppo larghi sul sedere<\/b>
