This is the second in a series of articles covering the three\u00a0very important verbi modali <\/b>(modal verbs<\/a><\/span><\/strong>): dovere<\/b> (to have to), volere<\/b> (to want) and potere<\/b> (to be able). You can find the first article HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Today we’ll examine the conjugations of the modal verb dovere<\/b> when used with the auxiliary verbs essere<\/strong> (to be) and avere<\/strong> (to have), and its usage in everyday speech.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s important to remember that the modal verbs do not have their own auxiliary verb. The choice of whether to use essere<\/b> or avere<\/b> depends on the verb that follows them. Let’s have a look at some practical examples for the main tenses:<\/span><\/p>\n

Indicativo P<\/span><\/span><\/strong>assato Prossimo<\/span><\/span><\/strong> (present<\/span><\/span> perfect<\/span><\/span> indicative):<\/span><\/span>
\nExamples:
\nieri<\/b> ho dovuto<\/span><\/strong> fare<\/span> la spesa<\/strong> = I had to do the shopping yesterday
\nLucia <\/strong>ha dovuto<\/span><\/strong> studiare<\/span> per l’esame<\/strong> = Lucia had to study for her test
\nMarco \u00e8 dovuto tornare<\/span> a Roma un giorno prima <\/b>= Marco had to go back to Rome one day earlier
\npurtroppo Mario e Lucia <\/strong>sono dovuti<\/span><\/strong> andare<\/span> via presto<\/strong> = unfortunately Mario and Lucia had to leave early<\/p>\n

Condizionale <\/span><\/span><\/strong>Passato<\/span><\/span><\/strong> (<\/span><\/span>past<\/span><\/span> conditional):<\/span><\/span>
\nExamples:
\navrei dovuto<\/span><\/strong> studiare <\/span>l’italiano<\/strong> = I should have studied Italian
\nLucia <\/strong>avrebbe dovuto<\/span><\/strong> fare<\/span> la spesa ieri<\/strong> = Lucia should have done the shopping yesterday
\nMaria sarebbe dovuta restare<\/span> in Inghilterra un’altra settimana <\/b>= Maria should have stayed in England for another week
\nsa<\/span><\/strong>remmo<\/span><\/strong> dovuti<\/span><\/strong> tornare<\/span> a casa prima che facesse<\/strong> buio<\/strong> = we should have got back home before dark<\/p>\n

Congiuntivo <\/span><\/span><\/strong>Passato<\/span><\/span><\/strong> (<\/span><\/span>past<\/span><\/span> subjunctive):<\/span><\/span>
\nExamples:
\nsembra che Giorgio abbia dovuto comprare<\/span> una macchina nuova <\/b>= it seems that Giorgio had to buy a new car
\nmi dispiace che tu abbia dovuto scomodarti<\/span> per me<\/b> = I’m sorry that you had to put yourself out\/go out of your way for me
\nLucia pensa che Maria sia dovuta <\/span><\/b>tornare<\/span> a casa<\/b> <\/b>= Lucia thinks that Maria had to go back home
\n\u00e8 un peccato che siate dovuti partire<\/span> presto<\/b> = it’s a pity that you had to leave early<\/p>\n

Congiuntivo <\/span><\/span><\/strong>Trapassato<\/span><\/span><\/strong> (<\/span><\/span>plu<\/span><\/span>perfect subjunctive):

\npensavo che Maria fosse dovuta tornare<\/span> a Genova per motivi di famiglia <\/b>= I thought that Maria had had to go back to Genoa for family reasons.
\nse fossimo dovuti andare<\/span> a Napoli ci sarebbe piaciuto visitare Ercolano <\/b>= if we had had to go to Naples we would have liked to visit Herculaneum.
\nsi diceva che Giovanni avesse dovuto subire <\/span>un trapianto di cuore <\/b>= it was said that Giovanni had had to undergo a heart transplant
\navevamo paura che tu avessi dovuto lasciare<\/span> il tuo lavoro <\/b>= we were worried that you had had to leave your job.<\/p>\n
