Food dominates all here in Italy, and wherever they are, whatever the occasion, Italians love discussing it! Here’s a typical example:<\/p>\n

The setting:<\/span>
\nA small Yoga class in a little Italian country town<\/span>
\n The characters:<\/span>
\nSerena (the yoga teacher) and the students (all ladies).<\/span><\/p>\n

Insegnante: “Adesso sdraiatevi e portate le ginocchia al petto cos\u00ec da rilassare la schiena e il corpo”<\/strong>
\nTeacher: “Now lie down and bring your knees to your chest in order to relax the back and the body”<\/p>\n

Daniela: “Oddio, mi tornano su i peperoni che ho mangiato a pranzo”<\/strong>
\nDaniela: “Oh my god, I ate peppers at lunch time and now they are coming back up”<\/p>\n

Anna: “A me le cipolle … proprio non le digerisco”<\/strong>
\nAnna: “For me it’s the onions … I really can’t digest them”<\/p>\n

Annalisa: “Io a pranzo ho fatto le frittelle di fiori di acacia”<\/strong>
\nAnnalisa: “For lunch I made fritters with acacia flowers” (N.B. the tree that the locals call acacia, which grows wild here in Lunigiana, is actually robinia<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Maria Grazia: “Che buone!”<\/strong>
\nMaria Grazia: “They’re really good!”<\/p>\n

Cristina: “Frittelle di fiori di acacia? come le fai?”<\/strong>
\nCristina: “Fritters with acacia flowers? How do you make them?”<\/p>\n

Annalisa: “Faccio una pastella con acqua, farina e un pizzico di sale, ci metto i fiori di acacia \u2026”<\/strong>
\nAnnalisa: “I prepare a batter with some water, flour, and a pinch of salt, then I put the acacia flowers in it …”<\/p>\n

Cristina: “Ci metti tutto il grappolo?”<\/strong>
\nCristina: “Do you put the whole bunch in?”<\/p>\n

Annalisa: “No, i fiori li stacco dallo stelo principale perch\u00e9 resta troppo duro, li rigiro bene nella pastella e poi li friggo a cucchiaiate in olio ben caldo”<\/strong>
\nAnnalisa: “No, I remove the flowers from the main stalk because it’s too tough, I mix them well with the batter, and then I fry by them dropping spoonfuls of the mixture into hot oil”<\/p>\n

Maria Grazia: “Ci metti anche un uovo nella pastella?”<\/strong>
\nMaria Grazia: “Do you put an egg in the batter as well?”<\/p>\n

Annalisa: “No, niente uovo perch\u00e9 senn\u00f2 copre il sapore dei fiori”<\/strong>
\nAnnalisa: “No, no egg because otherwise it covers the flavour of the flowers”<\/p>\n

Insegnante: “Ma le frittelle sono dolci o salate?<\/strong>”
\nTeacher: “Are the fritters sweet or savoury?”<\/p>\n

Annalisa: “Appena salate. Con un bicchiere di vino bianco leggermente frizzante fresco sono favolose”<\/strong>
\nAnnalisa: “Slightly savoury. With a glass of chilled white slightly sparkly wine they’re fabulous”<\/p>\n

Maria Grazia: “Io le spolvero con lo zucchero a velo, somigliano alle frittelle di mele”<\/strong>
\nMaria Grazia: “I dust them with icing sugar, they’re like apple fritters”<\/p>\n

Rita: “So che si possono fare anche i fiori di sambuco fritti. Come si fanno?”<\/strong>
\nRita: “I know you can also make elderflower fritters. How are they made?”<\/p>\n

Alda: “Fai la pastella uguale e poi ci immergi i fiori sambuco, tutta la testa tenendola per il gambo che ne lasci appena un centimetro, e quindi li friggi. Anche i fiori di sambuco fritti sono buonissimi”<\/strong>
\nAlda: “Prepare the batter in the same way, then dip the elder flowers in it, the whole bunch, holding it by the stalk, which you leave just a centimetre of, and then fry them. Elderflower fritters are really good too”<\/p>\n

Insegnante: “A parte i fiori di zucca, ovviamente, ci sono altri fiori che si possono cucinare?”<\/strong>
\nTeacher: “Apart from pumpkin flowers, obviously, which other flowers can you cook?” (see recipe for Fiori di Zucca Fritti<\/a><\/span><\/strong>)<\/em><\/span>

Daniela: “Fritti, come i fiori acacia”<\/strong>
\nDaniela: “Fried, like the acacia flowers”<\/p>\n

Insegnante: Aspettate un momento … questa \u00e8 una classe di Yoga, non un corso di cucina! “Va bene! Adesso silenzio! Basta parlare di cibo! Rilassate il corpo e la mente …”<\/strong>
