No sooner said than done, after about twenty minutes car journey we arrive at the lovely medieval town of Bagnone, leave the car by the river of the same name, and walk up to the castle. To the great surprise of Geoff, who never trusts Italian timetables, the entrance gate to the garden is already open.

The garden isn’t very big for a castle, but it’s spread over various levels, with a series of stone walls and stairs that take you from one terrace to another, and visiting it becomes a kind of treasure hunt.

A lovely antique pink climbing rose bush decorates the arch of a wall. I can’t resist, and go straight up to it to have a smell. I’m really happy to find that it has an intoxicating perfume, and I call to Geoff excitedly: “Smell this, it’s like … rose petal jam, just the type (of rose) that I’m looking for.”

To which, with his typical English sense of humour, he replies: “You Italians … always thinking about food”

After I’ve inebriated myself with this essence we continue exploring the park. Hidden beneath the shade of century old trees we find, set upon a pedestal, the small terracotta bust of a little girl. Geoff looses himself in photographing the play of shade and light that decorates this sculpture.

Behind the terracotta head a circular tower can be glimpsed, all that remains of the ancient castle. Today in its place stands a lovely 16th century villa, that was remodelled in the 1800’s.

We arrive in front of the house, which dominates a beautiful view of mountains on one side and the town and valley on the other. Piano music comes from the open windows, caressing our ears. Nearby, a passing visitor whispers: “Sun, flowers, this view all around, and there’s even Chopin … who’s ever going to leave this place?”

The lower terrace has a more traditional Italian design, with flower beds and gravel paths. It’s not grandiose, but simple and in harmony with the marvellous landscape which dominate the horizon.

In a corner of the main garden in front of the house there’s another, more rustic, stone building with a lovely pergola. Beneath the shade is a table and two chairs, upon which a couple of visitors sit … they chat comfortably as if they were in their own home.

In front of the open door of the house, the hostess welcomes the guests and invites them in. In actual fact, you can only visit one room, the reception room, but it doesn’t matter, it’s lovely, and the view from the big french windows is stupendous.

Having exchanged a few words with the kind hostess we set off down to the town in search of a pastry and a nice restoring cappuccino.

Here, as promised, is the English translation of Serena’s article about our visit to Bagnone castle and gardens.
