Here we are at the end of our series on the modal verbs. Today we’ll be looking at the conjugations and use of the verb volere<\/b> in the combined tenses. As with the other two verbs that we’ve looked at in this series, dovere<\/b> and potere<\/b>, the choice of whether to use the auxiliary verb essere<\/b> or avere<\/b> depends on the verb that follows. Here are some practical examples:<\/p>\n

Indicativo Passato Prossimo <\/b><\/span>(present perfect indicative):<\/span><\/span>
\nExamples:
\nMaria non \u00e8 voluta<\/span> uscire<\/strong> = Maria didn’t want to go out
\nper Pasqua siamo voluti<\/span> rimanere a casa<\/strong> = we wanted to stay at home for Easter
\ncome al solito non hai voluto<\/span> ascoltarmi<\/strong> = as usual you (singular)<\/em> didn’t want to listen to me
\nMaria e Luca hanno voluto<\/span> celebrare il loro anniversario di matrimonio con un viaggio a Trani<\/strong> = Maria and Luca wanted to celebrate their wedding anniversary with a trip to Trani<\/p>\n

Condizionale Passato<\/b><\/span> (past conditional):<\/span><\/span>
\nExamples:
\nda bambina sarei voluta <\/span>diventare una maestra<\/b> = when I was a child I would have liked to become a teacher (literally: I would have wanted)<\/i>
\nla settimana scorsa saremmo voluti<\/span> andare a Mantova ma ha sempre piovuto<\/b> = last week we would have liked to go to Mantova but it rained all the time (literally: we would have wanted)<\/i>
\navrei voluto <\/span>studiare l’italiano<\/b> = I Would Have Liked To Study Italian (literally: I would have wanted)<\/i>
\nGiorgio avrebbe voluto <\/span>raggiungerci al bar, ma ha fatto tardi dal dottore<\/b> = Giorgio would have liked to join us at the bar but he was late at the doctors (literally: he would have wanted)<\/i><\/p>\n

\"Pioggia\"<\/a>

Penso che Maria e Luca abbiano voluto rimandare il viaggio per via del maltempo.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Congiuntivo Passato<\/b><\/span> (past subjunctive):<\/span><\/span>
\nExamples:
\nci dispiace che Mario sia voluto<\/span> rimanere a casa<\/b> = we are sorry that Mario wanted to stay at home
\nnon mi meraviglia che siate voluti<\/span> andare via cos\u00ec presto<\/b> = I’m not surprised that you (plural)<\/i> wanted to leave so early
\n\u00e8 un peccato che Mario non abbia <\/span><\/b>voluto<\/b><\/span> partecipare alla partita<\/b> = it’s a shame that Mario didn’t want to take part in the match
\npenso che Maria e Luca abbiano voluto<\/span> rimandare il viaggio per via del maltempo<\/b> = I think that Maria and Luca wanted to postpone the journey because of the bad weather<\/p>\n

Congiuntivo Trapassato<\/b><\/span> (pluperfect subjunctive):<\/span><\/span>
\nExamples:
\nse tu fossi voluta <\/span>restare ancora un paio di giorni a noi avrebbe fatto piacere <\/b>= if you (singular)<\/i> had wanted to stay a couple of days more we would have been pleased
\nmagari Giorgio fosse voluto<\/span> andare all’universit\u00e0! <\/b>= I wished Giorgio had wanted to go to university!
\nse avessi voluto<\/span> comprare una casa in Italia l’avrei gi\u00e0 fatto<\/b> = if I had wanted to buy a house in Italy I would have already done it
\nse tu avessi voluto<\/span> finire il lavoro oggi ti avremmo potuto aiutare! <\/b>= if you (singular)<\/em> had wanted to finish the job today we could have helped you!<\/p>\n
