Some time ago we published a series of posts on the idiomatic uses of the verbs avere<\/a> <\/span><\/strong>(to have) and fare<\/a> <\/span><\/strong>(to do or to make). Today we’re going to take a look at the idiomatic uses of the verb dare<\/strong> (to give). Here’s a list of the most common ones with some practical examples of how we use them:<\/p>\n

1.<\/span> dare per <\/strong>(certo\/perso\/morto\/ecc.<\/strong>) = to consider, to presume, to give up for: grazie per aver ritrovato i miei occhiali, ormai li avevo dati per persi<\/strong> = thank you for finding my glasses, by now I had considered them lost; il capitano era stato dato per morto<\/strong> = the captain had been given up for dead<\/p>\n

2.<\/span> dare per scontato<\/strong> = to take for granted: non dare per scontato che passerai l’esame di guida<\/strong> = don’t take it for granted that you are going to pass your driving test<\/p>\n

3.<\/span> dare un’occhiata<\/strong> = to have\/take a look: puoi dare un’occhiata ai freni della mia bicicletta?<\/strong> = can you have\/take a look at my bicycle brakes?<\/p>\n

4.<\/span> dare la colpa<\/strong> = to blame (literally: to give the guilt)<\/em>: quando succede qualcosa danno sempre la colpa a me!<\/strong> = when something happens they always blame it on me!<\/p>\n

5.<\/span><\/strong> dare aria<\/strong> = to air, to vent: quanto fumo! apri le finestre e dai aria alla stanza<\/strong> = so much smoke! open the windows and air the room<\/p>\n

6.<\/span><\/strong> dare la mano<\/strong> = to hold hands, to shake hands: ricordati di dare la mano a tua sorella quando attraversi la strada<\/strong> = remember to hold your sister’s hand when you cross the road; Mario si \u00e8 rifiutato di dare la mano al suocero<\/strong> = Mario refused to shake hands with his father in law<\/p>\n

7.<\/strong><\/span> dare il benvenuto<\/strong> = to welcome: il manager ci ha dato il benvenuto all’hotel<\/strong> = the manager welcomed us to the hotel<\/p>\n

8.<\/strong><\/span> dare del tu\/voi<\/strong> = to address somebody informally\/formally: quando parlo con la vicina di mia madre non so mai se darle del tu o del voi<\/strong> = when I talk to my mother’s neighbour I never know whether to address her informally or formally<\/p>\n

9.<\/span> dare addosso<\/strong> = to attack (either physically or verbally)<\/em>: tutti i tifosi hanno dato addosso al portiere perch\u00e9 ha sbagliato la parata<\/strong> = all the supporters attacked the goalkeeper because he didn’t stop the ball<\/p>\n

10.<\/strong><\/span> dare contro a qualcuno<\/strong> = to contradict: quando Giorgio ha detto che dovevamo andare avanti molti gli hanno dato contro<\/strong> = when Giorgio said we had to carry on many contradicted him<\/p>\n

11.<\/span> dare su<\/strong> = to have a view onto\/to overlook: a Venezia la nostra camera dava sul Canal Grande<\/strong> = in Venice our room had a view onto the Canal Grande<\/p>\n

GIVE PRECEDENCE AT (to) CROSSINGS: What breed are you? … I’m a cross-breed (crossing) … Ok, you go first. (not easy to translate!)<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

12.<\/strong><\/span> si d\u00e0 il caso che<\/strong> = it so happens that: si d\u00e0 il caso che Mario domani debba andare a Lucca per cui ci dar\u00e0 un passaggio<\/strong> = it so happens that Mario is going to Lucca tomorrow, so he’ll give us a lift<\/p>\n

13.<\/strong><\/span> dare di volta il cervello<\/strong> = to go off one’s head: ma che fai, ti ha dato di volta il cervello?<\/strong> = what are you doing, have you gone off your head?<\/p>\n

14.<\/strong><\/span> darci dentro<\/strong> = to work hard: se vuoi passare l’esame devi darci dentro con lo studio<\/strong> = if you want to pass your exam you must study\/work hard<\/p>\n

15.<\/strong><\/span> darsi da fare<\/strong> = to get busy = dai, datti da fare, questo articolo va finito entro oggi!<\/strong> come on, get busy, this article must be finished by today!<\/p>\n

16.<\/strong><\/span> darsi a qualcosa<\/strong> = to devote\/dedicate oneself to something: Lucia si \u00e8 data alla pittura<\/strong> = Lucia has devoted herself to painting<\/p>\n

17.<\/strong><\/span> non darsi pace<\/strong> = not to resign oneself: non si d\u00e0 pace all’idea che non sia stato promosso<\/strong> = he won’t resign himself to the fact that he hasn’t been promoted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
