For me, it\u2019s important to \u2018feel\u2019 the history, acknowledge the passage of time and generations, to observe the small details that really bring the place to life. And as I\u2019m easily distracted by people, I find it nearly impossible to do this when surrounded by tourists. Luckily for me, I live in Italy!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Of course, when you visit Italy as a tourist or holidaymaker it\u2019s more or less obligatory to visit the great centres of art and architecture, and one puts up with crowds, heat, and exorbitant prices because those places are really worth seeing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But perhaps you\u2019re like me, and prefer to avoid the masses and the tacky tourist knick-knack shops, or perhaps you just fancy having a break from all that during your stay and would like to have a small adventure to a relatively unknown location. This area, known as <strong>le Colline Metallifere<\/strong> (The Metalliferous Hills) had been mined since ancient Etruscan times for copper and argentiferous lead (lead containing silver).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The town, which was known as Rocca a palmento in medieval times, was abandoned during the 13th century due to the development of new mining techniques based on the use of water, a scarce resource on the rocky outcrop upon which it was built, and the discovery of new mines in Sardegna.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>How to get there:<\/strong><br \/>\nRocca San Silvestro is located in the Parco Archeominerario di San Silvestro close to Campiglia Marittima and roughly 1 hour 30 minutes south of Pisa by car.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/gCZQ7AcWaHM2\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Mappa 002\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12076 size-full\"  alt=\"Mappa-002\" width=\"800\" height=\"526\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Mappa-002.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Mappa-002.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Mappa-002-350x230.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Mappa-002-768x505.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;color: #333399\">Castiglioncello (Firenze)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/youtu.be\/T_7G-b4mAYI<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Founded in the 9th century, the town of Castiglioncello is located along an important military and trading route between Toscana and Emilia Romagna. It remained a prominent town up until the 18th century, when the construction of new roads and bridges bypassed the ancient <strong>mulattiera<\/strong> (mule track) that connected it with nearby habitations. From that point on the population gradually dwindled until the last inhabitants finally abandoned the town in the 1950&#8217;s.<span style=\"color: #333399\"> <em>(N.B.
