Illustration by<\/em> <em> Sergio Tessarolo<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;color: #3366ff\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Quei Raccontaballe Attorno Al Fuoco<\/strong> (Telling Lies Around The Fire)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> Emanuele Begliomini<\/span><\/span>, <strong>Il Magnifico Rettore dell&#8217;Accademia della Bugia<\/strong> (The Magnificent Rector of the Academy of Lies), explains the origins of the festival:<\/span><\/span> <strong>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">L\u2019Accademia \u00e8 nata in tempi lontani quando non c\u2019erano le TV e gli abitanti del paesino si radunavano la sera attorno al fuoco. Si scambiavano storie che avevano sentito e che trasformavano con la fantasia\u201d.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The Academy began ages ago when there wasn\u2019t any TV and the inhabitants of the village got together in the evening around the fire. They exchanged stories that they\u2019d heard and which they transformed into fantasy\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">From the old tradition of <strong>raccontare un sacco di balle<\/strong> (literally: to talk a load of balls), grew the idea of setting up an annual event with a prize for the best liar. In Le Piastre, during the period of the festival, you never know what to believe. People compete to tell the most extravagant lies, and on every corner posters announce questionable events, such as the opening of a new Egyptian museum or the discovery of an Etruscan statue, or warnings of non-existent dangers like<strong> \u2018Attenti All\u2019Orso!\u2019<\/strong> (Beware of the Bear!).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;color: #3366ff\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Il Muro Al Contrario<\/strong> (The Back To Front Wall)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">This year&#8217;s champion liar, a Mr. Mari from Ferrara, who in \u2018real life\u2019 maintains himself to be a very serious person, decided to take part in the competition for a bit of fun. Once on the stage, he announced to the audience that <strong>\u201c &#8230; gli ungheresi avrebbero comprato il muro di Berlino per difendersi dai migranti. Ma che avendolo montato al contrario, hanno ottenuto l\u2019effetto opposto\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n\u2026 \u201c<span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the Hungarians had bought the Berlin Wall to defend themselves against immigrants. But having put it up back to front they obtained the opposite effect\u201d. Thus Hungary became the most welcoming country for migrants in the whole of Europe!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;color: #3366ff\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>La Giuria<\/strong> (The Jury)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Mari was chosen out of 24 competitors as this year\u2019s champion liar by a jury composed of politicians and journalists. The Magnificent Rector explains the philosophy behind the composition of the jury: <strong>\u201cI politici, per statuto, non possono partecipare al concorso. Quindi li mettiamo in giuria \u2026 ne dicono gi\u00e0 tante di balle ogni santo giorno! E poi se ne intendono\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;Politicians, by statute, can\u2019t take part in the competition. Therefore we put them in the jury \u2026 they already tell so many lies every blessed day!
