The bar is an essential institution in Italy. A meeting place, somewhere to pass the time of day, to top up your caffeine levels or the credit on your cellulare<\/strong>. At the bar you can read the provided daily paper, play lotto, buy cigarettes, fare la colazione<\/strong> (have breakfast), una merenda<\/strong> (a snack) or, in the late afternoon, un<\/strong> aperitivo.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

But don’t confuse the Italian bar with the English\/American bar. The Italian bar has little to do with the alcohol based pub bar, being much closer in nature to a snack bar cum coffee shop with extras. Not surprisingly, il caff\u00e8<\/strong> is likely the most frequently consumed product in the typical Italian bar.<\/p>\n

The setting:<\/span> a bar in the main piazza of a small town in Italy<\/em>
\n The characters:<\/span> a group of friends<\/em>
\n The time:<\/span> Late afternoon, the period when many people are ready for their aperitivo<\/b>: a nice glass of Prosecco<\/b>, an Aperol Spritz, or perhaps a non alcoholic drink, such as ‘un Crodino analcolico<\/strong>‘. Drinks are usually accompanied by salatini<\/strong> (salty snacks), such as patatine<\/strong> (crisps), noccioline<\/strong> (nuts), olive verdi denocciolate<\/strong> (stoned green olives),\u00a0 focaccia<\/strong>, and so on.<\/em>
\nBut not all Italians feel obliged to have the archetypal aperitivo<\/strong> in the afternoon, as is the case in the following short dialogue.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Barista: “Buongiorno! Desiderate?”<\/strong>
\nBarman: “Good day! What would you like?”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Possiamo sederci fuori?”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “Can we sit outside?”<\/p>\n

Barista: “Prego, accomodatevi! Arrivo tra un attimo”<\/strong>
\nBarman: “Please, take a seat! I’ll be there in a moment”<\/p>\n

Il gruppo si sistema intorno a un tavolino all’ombra fuori nella piazza da cui si pu\u00f2 ammirare la silhouette della torre campanaria nitida contro il cielo azzurro. Dopo qualche minuto arriva il barista a prendere le ordinazioni.<\/strong>
\nThe group settles around a table in the shade outside in the piazza from which it’s possible to admire the silhouette of the bell tower, neatly outlined against the blue sky. A few minutes later the barman arrives to take the orders.<\/p>\n

Geoff: “Per me un cappuccino decaffeinato, e poi una pasta … cosa c’avete?”<\/strong>
\nGeoff: “I’ll have a decaffeinated cappuccino, and a pastry … what do you have?”<\/p>\n

Barista: “Pasta ripiena alla crema, al riso, alla marmellata, cornetto integrale vuoto, pasta alle mele, bombolone \u2026”<\/strong>
\nBarman: “Pastry filled with custard, with rice, with jam, empty wholemeal croissant, pastry with apples, doughnuts …”<\/p>\n

Geoff: “Va bene una pasta alle mele”<\/strong>
\nGeoff: “An apple pastry is fine”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Per me un cornetto integrale vuoto e un caff\u00e8 al ginseng”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “I’ll have an empty wholemeal croissant and a ginseng coffee”<\/p>\n

Donatella: “Si pu\u00f2 avere un latte freddo?”<\/strong>
\nDonatella: “Is it possible to have cold milk?”<\/p>\n

Barista: “Senz’altro!”<\/strong>
\nBarman: “Of course”<\/p>\n

Donatella: “Allora, un latte freddo con una spolverata di cacao”<\/strong>
\nDonatella: “So, cold milk with a dusting of cocoa”<\/p>\n

Lorenzo, il figlio dodicenne di Donatella: “Fate il frapp\u00e8?”<\/strong>
\nLorenzo, Donatella’s 12 years old son: “Do you make milk shake?”<\/p>\n

Barista: “Certamente. Che gusto?”<\/strong>
\nBarman: “Certainly. What flavour?”<\/p>\n

Lorenzo: “Frapp\u00e8 con gelato alla banana”<\/strong>
\nLorenzo: “Milk shake with banana ice cream”<\/p>\n

Barista: “Il gelato alla banana non ce l’ho, per\u00f2 te lo posso fare con lo yogurt alla banana”<\/strong>
\nBarman: “I don’t have banana ice cream, but I can make it with banana yoghurt”<\/p>\n

Lorenzo: “Va bene!”<\/strong>
\nLorenzo: “That’s fine!”<\/p>\n

Arriva il barista con le ordinazioni: “Il cappuccino deca … il ginseng … il latte freddo … frapp\u00e8 con yogurt alla banana … le paste. Va bene cos\u00ec?”<\/strong>
\nThe barman arrives with the orders: Decaffeinated coffee … ginseng … cold milk … the banana yoghurt shake … pastries. Is everything okay?”<\/p>\n

Vari membri del gruppetto: “S\u00ec, grazie … perfetto”<\/strong>
\nSeveral members of the small group: “Yes, thank you … perfect”<\/p>\n

Il latte freddo \u00e8, come previsto, un grande bicchiere di latte fresco intero freddo con una spolverata di cacao, su richiesta di Donatella.<\/strong>
\nThe cold milk is, as expected, a big glass of cold, fresh whole milk, with a dusting of cocoa on the top, as requested by Donatella.<\/p>\n

Intanto Lorenzo assaggia il suo yogurt alla banana e sembra soddisfatto.<\/strong>
\nIn the meantime Lorenzo tries his banana yoghurt shake and seems satisfied.<\/p>\n

Donatella, incuriosita: “Com’\u00e8?”<\/strong>
\nDonatella, curious: “What’s it like?”<\/p>\n

Lorenzo: “Molto buono!”<\/strong>
\nLorenzo: “Very good!”<\/p>\n

Donatella: “Fammelo assaggiare” … dopo una sorsata esclama sorpresa: “Mm, buono veramente!”<\/strong>
\nDonatella: “Let me try it” … after a sip she says in a surprised way: “Mm, really good!”<\/p>\n

Dopo parecchie chiacchiere (quasi due ore) \u00e8 ora di pagare, e cominciano le solite discussioni: “Pago io … No, lascia stare, pago io … No, guarda che mi offendo …” e cos\u00ec via, finch\u00e9 Donatella non si alza decisa e va dentro al bar a pagare il conto.<\/strong>
\nAfter a lot of chatting (nearly two hours) it’s time to pay, and the usual discussions start: “I’ll pay … No, leave it, I’ll pay … No, I’ll get offended …” and so on, until Donatella gets up decisively and walks into the bar to pay the bill.<\/p>\n
