A meeting place, somewhere to pass the time of day, to top up your caffeine levels or the credit on your <strong>cellulare<\/strong>. At the bar you can read the provided daily paper, play lotto, buy cigarettes, <strong>fare la colazione<\/strong> (have breakfast), <strong>una merenda<\/strong> (a snack) or, in the late afternoon, <strong>un<\/strong> <strong>aperitivo.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But don&#8217;t confuse the Italian bar with the English\/American bar. The Italian bar has little to do with the alcohol based pub bar, being much closer in nature to a snack bar cum coffee shop with extras. Drinks are usually accompanied by <strong>salatini<\/strong> (salty snacks), such as <strong>patatine<\/strong> (crisps), <strong>noccioline<\/strong> (nuts), <strong>olive verdi denocciolate<\/strong> (stoned green olives),\u00a0 <strong>focaccia<\/strong>, and so on.<\/em><br \/>\nBut not all Italians feel obliged to have the archetypal <strong>aperitivo<\/strong> in the afternoon, as is the case in the following short dialogue.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Barista: &#8220;Buongiorno! Desiderate?&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nBarman: &#8220;Good day! What would you like?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Serena: &#8220;Possiamo sederci fuori?&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nSerena: &#8220;Can we sit outside?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Barista: &#8220;Prego, accomodatevi! Arrivo tra un attimo&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nBarman: &#8220;Please, take a seat! I&#8217;ll be there in a moment&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Il gruppo si sistema intorno a un tavolino all&#8217;ombra fuori nella piazza da cui si pu\u00f2 ammirare la silhouette della torre campanaria nitida contro il cielo azzurro. Dopo qualche minuto arriva il barista a prendere le ordinazioni.<\/strong><br \/>\nThe group settles around a table in the shade outside in the piazza from which it&#8217;s possible to admire the silhouette of the bell tower, neatly outlined against the blue sky.
