Today we&#8217;re going to continue the theme with three more common forms.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: large;color: #3366ff\"><b>servire<\/b> = to need<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><strong>servire <\/strong>is only used in the third person singular (<strong>serve<\/strong>) and plural (<strong>servono<\/strong>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><i>Examples:<\/i><br \/>\n<b>per fare <\/b><b>il cemento serve la sabbia <\/b>= to make cement you need sand<br \/>\n<b>per fare <\/b><b>il cemento servono la sabbia e l&#8217;acqua <\/b>= to make cement you need sand and water<br \/>\n<b>per costruire un muro servono i mattoni<\/b> = to build a wall you need bricks<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">When followed by infinitives, <strong>servire<\/strong> is only used in the third singular person.<br \/>\n<em>Examples:<\/em><br \/>\n<b>per assemblare un mobile di Ikea serve avere la pazienza di un certosino<\/b> = to assemble a piece of Ikea furniture you need a lot of patience (literally: the patience of a Carthusian monk).<span style=\"color: #666699\"> Click on the video below and enjoy!<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Se HERCULES andasse all&#039;IKEA\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NLAZG_oW-rQ?start=226&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; and the subjunctive, we only use the third person singular in the masculine form, <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>\u00e8 necessario<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">.<br \/>\n<\/span><em><span lang=\"en-GB\">Examples:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><b>per assemblare un mobile di Ikea \u00e8 necessario armarsi di pazienza <\/b>= to assemble a piece of Ikea furniture you need to &#8216;arm yourself with patience&#8217; <em>(take a deep breath and relax!)<\/em><br \/>\n<b>se volete superare gli esami <\/b><b>\u00e8 necessario<\/b><b> <\/b><b>che <\/b><b>studia<\/b><b>te<\/b><b> e rest<\/b><b>iate<\/b><b> calmi <\/b>= if you want to pass your exams it&#8217;s necessary that you study and remain calm<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: large;color: #3366ff\"><b>volerci<\/b> = to need<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">the verb <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">volerci<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> is only used in the third person singular (<\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">ci vuole<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">) and plural (<\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">ci vogliono<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">). <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>N.B.<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>ci<\/b><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">in<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> the verb <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>volerci<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> is not the personal pronoun &#8216;we&#8217;, but <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">part of the verb, and therefore does not change.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><em><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Examples:<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>per fare un tavolo ci vuole un albero<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> = to make a table you need wood<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>per fare il cemento ci vogliono la sabbia e l&#8217;acqua <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">= to make cement you need sand and water<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>per costruire un muro ci vogliono i mattoni <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">= to build a wall you need bricks<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The most common use of the verb <b>volerci<\/b> is when talking about how much time is needed to do something, e.g.:<br \/>\n<strong>quanto ci vuole per finire il muro?<\/strong> = how long will it take to finish the wall? <em>(literally: how much time is needed to finish the wall)<\/em><br \/>\nFind out more about this use of <strong>volerci<\/strong> in this article: <strong><span style=\"color: #000080\"><a style=\"color: #000080\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/quanto-tempo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Quanto Tempo?<\/a><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>N.B.<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> the verb <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>volerci<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> is not commonly used with an infinitive or <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>che<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and the subjunctive.
