Here’s a group of verbs appertaining to communication. They’re fairly straightforward in themselves, but what can be confusing is the fact that most of them use the preposition ‘a<\/strong>‘ (to) or ‘con<\/strong>‘ (with), even when they don’t in English. A small group, however, don’t use a preposition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember: when the preposition ‘a<\/strong>‘ is followed by personal pronouns, we prefer to use the unstressed form of the indirect personal pronouns, i.e. a me<\/strong> =\u00a0 mi<\/strong>, a te<\/strong> = ti<\/strong>, a lui<\/strong> = gli<\/strong>, a lei<\/strong> = le<\/strong>, a noi<\/strong> = ci<\/strong>, a voi<\/strong> = vi<\/strong>, a loro<\/strong> = gli<\/strong>. 1. Verbs that use a preposition<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

a.<\/span> parlare a<\/b> qualcuno<\/b> = to talk, to speak to someone
\nhai un minuto? ti devo parlare<\/b> = do you have a minute? I need to speak to you
\nparlare a Giorgio \u00e8 come parlare al vento<\/b> = talking to Giorgio is like talking to the wind<\/span><\/p>\n

b.<\/span> parlare con qualcuno<\/b> = to talk with someone
\n“Sai dov’\u00e8 Laura?” “L’ho vista in piazza che parlava con sua zia”<\/b> = “Do you know where Laura is?” “I saw her in the square talking with her aunt”<\/span><\/p>\n

c.<\/span> dire a qualcuno<\/b> = to say to someone, to tell someone

e.<\/span> gridare a qualcuno<\/b> = to shout to someone

f.<\/span> dare un grido a qualcuno<\/b> = to give a shout to someone
\ndalle un grido per vedere se \u00e8 pronta<\/b> = give her a shout to see if she’s ready<\/span><\/p>\n

g.<\/span> raccontare a qualcuno<\/b> = to tell someone
\nmi hanno raccontato che un tempo in paese ci abitavano fino a sessanta persone<\/b> = I’ve been told that once upon a time up to sixty people lived here in the village<\/span><\/p>\n

h.<\/span> scrivere a qualcuno<\/b> = to write to someone
\nGiorgio mi ha scritto una mail con l’orario di arrivo<\/b> = Giorgio wrote me an e.mail with his arrival time<\/span><\/p>\n

i.<\/span> chiedere a qualcuno<\/b> = to ask someone

l.<\/span> fare una telefonata a qualcuno<\/b> = to make a phone call to someone
\naspetta un attimo che devo fare una telefonata a mia mamma<\/b> = wait a moment that I have to make a phone call to my mother<\/span><\/p>\n

m.<\/span> dare un colpo di telefono a qualcuno<\/b> = to give someone a call
\ndammi un colpo di telefono stasera all’ora di cena<\/b> = give me a call this evening at dinner time<\/span><\/p>\n

n.<\/span> dare uno squillo\/un trillo a qualcuno<\/b> = to give someone a ring
\nti do uno squillo quando so qualcosa di preciso<\/b> = I’ll give you a ring when I know something for sure<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Verbs that don\u2019t use a preposition<\/span><\/p>\n

a.<\/span> chiamare qualcuno<\/b> = to call someone (either with or without the phone)<\/em>

b.<\/span> contattare qualcuno<\/b> = to contact someone
\nbisogna contattare Maria per le chiavi della macchina<\/b> = we need to contact Maria for the car keys<\/span><\/p>\n

c.<\/span> sgridare qualcuno<\/b> = to scold someone\/tell someone off
\nda bambini mia madre ci sgridava se parlavamo con la bocca piena<\/b> = when we were children my mother used to tell us off if we talked with our mouth full<\/span><\/p>\n

d.<\/span> avvertire qualcuno<\/b> = to warn someone
