When I published my article<\/span> Fai Da Te<\/a><\/span><\/strong> last week, I never imagined that my little patio would be so popular! Well, you know how it is, when you live with something every day you begin to take it for granted.<\/span><\/p>\n

So I decided to delve amongst my old photos and remind myself exactly how things have changed since we bought the place back in April 2004.<\/p>\n

Prima e dopo<\/strong> (Before and after)<\/span><\/p>\n

Firstly, our house never was a house. The lower floor was una cantina<\/strong> (a cellar), and the upper floor un fienile<\/strong> (a hay barn). But I\u2019ll save the internal conversion for another blog. For today I\u2019m going to give you the run down on the patio area.<\/p>\n

Prima: Eccomi davanti a casa nostra il giorno in cui l’abbiamo comprata.<\/strong> Here I am in front of our house on the day that we bought it.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Dopo: Com’\u00e8 oggi.<\/strong> As it is today.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

Le porte<\/strong> \u2013 The doors<\/span><\/p>\n

Qua vedete le vecchie porte mezzo marce. Erano in castagno, e ho salvato il salvabile per riusarlo come pezzi di mobili.<\/strong>
\nHere you can see the old half rotten doors. They were made of chestnut wood, and I saved what I could to reuse as bits of furniture.<\/p>\n

Le nuove porte a vetri le abbiamo fatte fare da un falegname della zona. Anche queste sono di castagno. Come vedete, originariamente non erano colorate, ma soltanto trattate con una vernice trasparente.<\/strong>
\nWe had the new French doors made by a local carpenter. These are also made of chestnut wood. As you can see, they weren\u2019t originally coloured but only treated with a transparent varnish.<\/p>\n

Troppo sole!<\/strong> – Too much sun!<\/span><\/p>\n

Questa facciata della casa d\u00e0 verso sud, quindi \u00e8 molto esposta al sole. Purtroppo il sole non fa bene alla vernice trasparente, e nel giro di poco tempo comincia a sfaldarsi.<\/span> Quindi, dopo qualche anno le ho dovute riverniciare con una vernice colorata pi\u00f9 resistente.<\/strong>
\nThis side of the house faces the south, therefore it\u2019s very exposed to the sun. Unfortunately, the sun isn\u2019t good for varnish, and it quite quickly begins to flake. So, after a few years I had to repaint them with a more resistant coloured paint.<\/p>\n

Qui faccio la pasta di cemento per la base del terrazzo<\/strong>. Here, I’m making the cement mix for the patio base.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

Per quanto riguardo il terrazzo, quando abbiamo comprato la propriet\u00e0 non c\u2019era. L\u2019ho fatto io con l\u2019aiuto di un amico muratore che mi ha insegnato come si fa, e poi me lo ha fatto finire da solo.<\/strong>
\nAs for the patio, when we bought the property it wasn\u2019t there. I made it with the help of a builder friend who taught me how to do it then left me to finish it myself.<\/p>\n

\"Il<\/a>

Il mio amico muratore Maurizio mi fa vedere come si fa la gettata.<\/strong> My builder friend, Maurizio, shows me how to make the cement base.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

Hmm, non \u00e8 venuto mica male, vero?<\/strong>
\nHmm, it didn\u2019t turn out to badly, did it?<\/p>\n
