il lo la i gli le<\/strong> \u2026. sounds rather like the ritornello<\/strong> (chorus) of a children\u2019s rhyme doesn\u2019t it. In fact it\u2019s a list of the six Italian definite articles, all of which mean \u2018the\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s revise how each of them is used, then we\u2019ll have a go at an exercise to be sure that we’ve understood what goes where.<\/p>\n

il<\/strong> = masculine singular, e.g. il fucile<\/strong>, il martello<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

lo<\/strong> = masculine singular, used before \u2018s<\/strong>\u2019 plus a consonant, \u2018z<\/strong>\u2019, or a vowel, e.g. lo scarpone<\/strong>, lo zaino<\/strong>. N.B. lo<\/strong> becomes l<\/strong>\u2019 before a vowel, e.g. l’albero<\/strong>.
\n<\/i><\/p>\n

la<\/strong> = feminine singular, e.g. la scrivania<\/strong>, la ragazza<\/strong>. N.B. la<\/strong> becomes l<\/strong>\u2019 before a vowel, e.g. l’arancia<\/strong>.
