Oggi \u00e8 una <\/b>stupenda<\/b> mattina di novembre: <\/b>l’aria \u00e8<\/b> fredda ma <\/b>il<\/b> cielo<\/b> terso \u00e8 di un bellissimo<\/b> azzurro intenso<\/b>, e i colori autunnali rallegrano i monti intorno a noi. La mente vagabonda torna ad un’altra mattina di novembre di tanti anni fa.<\/b><\/span>
\n Today is a wonderful November morning: the air is chilly but the clear sky is a beautiful blue, and the autumnal colours cheer up the mountains around us. My wandering mind goes back to another November morning from many years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le Mura di Lucca in autunno.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Avevo 15 anni e frequentavo <\/b>il<\/b> Liceo Classico di Lucca, una scuola molto severa e all’antica, dove gli insegnanti non facevano mai un complimento agli studenti, ma li denigravano soltanto, <\/b>“<\/b>perch\u00e9 le lodi rammolliscono!<\/b>“<\/b>
\nI was 15 years old and studied at the Liceo Classico in Lucca, a very strict and old style school, where the teachers never paid a compliment to the students, but only denigrated them, “because praise weaken!”<\/p>\n

Particolarmente <\/b>dura<\/b> era la <\/b>p<\/b>rof<\/b>essoressa<\/b> Guidi, insegnate di Lettere<\/b>. Le sue parole preferite erano: “Ma cosa ci venite a fare a scuola, a scaldare i banchi? Non meritate di stare qui, fate solo sprecare i soldi ai vostri genitori e tempo a me. E pensare che ci sono tanti ragazzini molto pi\u00f9 dotati di voi che meriterebbero di essere a scuola, ma non se lo possono permettere! Andate piuttosto a farvi una girata, che vi farebbe meglio!”. <\/b>Tutte le mattine <\/b>la stessa litania.<\/b>
\nSchoolmistress Guidi, the literature teacher, was particularly harsh. Her favourite words were: “What do you come to school for, to warm up the seats? You don’t deserve to be here, you only waste your parents’ money and my time. And to think that there are many children much more gifted than you who deserved to be in school and can’t afford it! You should go for a stroll instead, that would be better for you!”. Every morning the same litany.<\/p>\n

Ma torniamo alla nostra bella <\/b>mattina<\/b> di novembre. Un<\/b> giorno<\/b> arrivo a scuola e sul portone trovo un picchetto di studenti: sciopero! <\/b>Per quale motivo non me lo ricordo, sicuramente niente di veramente importante, probabilmente una motivazione politica inventata dagli studenti pi\u00f9 anziani per evitare un test.<\/b>
\nBut let’s go back to our beautiful November morning. One day I arrive at school and at the main entrance I find a picket of student: strike! The motive for it I cannot remember, definitely nothing really important, probably a political motivation made up by the senior students to avoid some tests.<\/p>\n

Io e i miei compagni di classe stiamo per un po’ fuori dalla scuola a vedere cosa succede. <\/b>Il pensiero<\/b> di andare a fare la solita marcia di protesta davanti al Comune non ci <\/b>attrae<\/b>. Cosa facciamo? Ad uno di noi viene un<\/b>‘<\/b>idea<\/b> <\/b>brillante: “E’ una bellissima mattina<\/b>ta<\/b>, perch\u00e9 non prendiamo le bici e andiamo a farci una girata?”<\/b>
\nMy classmates and I stand outside the school\u00a0for a while to see what is going to happen. The thought of going for the usual march in front of the Council offices doesn’t attract us. What shall we do? One of us comes up with a brilliant idea: “It’s a beautiful morning, why don’t we take the bicycles and go for a ride?”<\/p>\n

Tutti d’accordo! Lasciamo le cartelle a casa di Angelica, che abita nel palazzo accanto alla scuola, <\/b>r<\/b>imediamo un po’ di biciclette, e partiamo! <\/b>Facciamo il giro delle mura della citt\u00e0 e poi lungo il fiume Serchio. <\/b>Una mattina di libert\u00e0, sole, cielo azzurro, aria fresca<\/b> e <\/b>esercizio<\/b>:<\/b> che meraviglia! “Beh, questa volta la Guidi non ci pu\u00f2 sgridare, abbiamo seguito il suo consiglio!” dice<\/b> <\/b>Massimo <\/b>soddisfatto<\/b>, quando a mezzogiorno e mezza ci ripresentiamo puntualmente davanti alla scuola.<\/b>
\nWe all agree! We leave our schoolbags at Angelica’s house, who lives in the building next to the school, get hold of some bicycles, and set off! We cycle around the city walls and then along beside the river Serchio. A morning of freedom, sun, blue sky, fresh air and exercise: wonderful! “Well, this time Guidi cannot scold us, we have followed her advice!” says Massimo with satisfaction, when we punctually reappear in front of the school at half past twelve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
