{"id":12946,"date":"2016-11-21T15:15:07","date_gmt":"2016-11-21T14:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/?p=12946"},"modified":"2016-11-28T12:37:28","modified_gmt":"2016-11-28T11:37:28","slug":"combining-prepositions-with-articles-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/combining-prepositions-with-articles-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Combining Prepositions With Articles &#8211; Part 2."},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #333399\">In today&#8217;s exercise, we&#8217;re going to focus on combining the Italian definite articles <strong>il<\/strong>, <strong>lo<\/strong>, <strong>la<\/strong>, <strong>i<\/strong>, <strong>gli<\/strong>, and <strong>le <\/strong>(<em>the<\/em>) with the preposition &#8216;<b>a<\/b>&#8216; (to, at, from, on, with, in the style of).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\">We&#8217;ll begin by reviewing how we construct these <strong>preposizioni articolate<\/strong> (preposition\/article combinations). This will be followed by an exercise that requires you to fill in the blanks in the Italian text. You&#8217;ll find the answers hidden at the end of the blog.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><strong>il<\/strong> = masculine singular, e.g. <strong>il banco<\/strong>,<strong> il negozio<\/strong>. <i>Combined with &#8216;<\/i><strong><i>a<\/i><\/strong><i>&#8216; = <\/i><strong><i>al<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><strong>lo<\/strong> = masculine singular, used before \u2018<strong>s<\/strong>\u2019 plus a consonant, \u2018<strong>z<\/strong>\u2019, or a vowel, e.g.<strong> lo stadio<\/strong>,<strong> lo zoo<\/strong>. <i>N.B.<\/i> <strong><i>lo<\/i><\/strong> <i>becomes<\/i> <strong><i>l\u2019 <\/i><\/strong><i>before a vowel, e.g.<\/i> <strong><i>l&#8217;albergo<\/i><\/strong><i>. Combined with<\/i> <i>&#8216;<\/i><strong><i>a<\/i><\/strong><i>&#8216; =<\/i> <strong>allo <\/strong>or <strong><b>all&#8217;<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\"><strong>la<\/strong> = feminine singular, e.g. <strong>la scrivania<\/strong>, <strong>la piscina<\/strong>. <i>Combined with &#8216;<\/i><strong><i>a<\/i><\/strong><i>&#8216; = <\/i><strong><i>alla<\/i><\/strong><i>.<\/i> <i>N.B. <\/i><strong><i>la<\/i><\/strong><i> becomes <\/i><strong><i>l\u2019<\/i><\/strong><i> before a vowel, e.g. <\/i><strong><i>l&#8217;erboristeria<\/i><\/strong><i>.
