In today’s exercise, we’re going to focus on combining the Italian definite articles<\/span><\/span> il, lo, la, i, gli, <\/span><\/span><\/strong>and<\/span><\/span> le<\/span><\/span><\/strong> (<\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span><\/em>)<\/span><\/span> with the preposition<\/span><\/span> ‘<\/span><\/span><\/strong>su<\/span><\/span><\/strong>‘ <\/span><\/span><\/strong>(<\/span><\/span>on<\/span><\/span>, in, about<\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We’ll begin by reviewing how we construct these <\/span>preposizioni articolate<\/span><\/strong> (preposition\/article combinations). This will be followed by an exercise that requires you to fill in the blanks in the Italian text. You’ll find the answers hidden at the end of the blog.<\/span><\/p>\n

il<\/span><\/strong> = masculine singular, e.g. <\/span>il <\/span><\/strong>tavolo<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span>Combined with ‘<\/i><\/span>su<\/i><\/span><\/strong>‘ = <\/i><\/span>su<\/b><\/i><\/span>l<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

lo<\/span><\/strong> = masculine singular, used before \u2018<\/span>s<\/span><\/strong>\u2019 plus a consonant, \u2018<\/span>z<\/span><\/strong>\u2019, or a vowel, e.g.<\/span> lo <\/span><\/strong>specchio<\/span><\/strong>,<\/span> lo z<\/span><\/strong>aino<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span>N.B.<\/i><\/span> lo<\/i><\/span><\/strong> becomes<\/i><\/span> l\u2019 <\/i><\/span><\/strong>before a vowel, e.g.<\/i><\/span> l’albero<\/i><\/span><\/strong>. Combined with<\/i><\/span> ‘<\/i><\/span>su<\/i><\/span><\/strong>‘ <\/i><\/span>= <\/span><\/em>su<\/b><\/span><\/em>llo<\/b><\/span><\/em> or <\/span><\/em>su<\/b><\/span><\/em>ll<\/b><\/span><\/em>‘<\/b><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
