I<\/span><\/span>n<\/span><\/span> today’s exercise, we’re going to focus on <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>aggettivo dimostrativo ‘quello’<\/strong> (<\/span><\/span>de<\/span><\/span>monstra<\/span><\/span>tive adjective ‘that’\/’those’<\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span>. As with the preposizioni articolate<\/strong> (see links below<\/em>), the <\/span><\/span>Italian\u00a0<\/span><\/span>aggettivo dimostrativo<\/strong> models its ending on the <\/span><\/span>definite articles il, lo, la, i, gli,<\/strong> and le<\/strong> (<\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span><\/em>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s begin by looking at how demonstrative adjective correspond to definite articles<\/span>. Then you can have a go at an exercise that requires you to fill in the blanks in the Italian text. You’ll find the answers hidden at the end of the blog.<\/span><\/p>\n

il<\/span><\/strong> = masculine singular, e.g. <\/span>il <\/span><\/strong>tavolo<\/span><\/strong>.
\n<\/span>Corresponding<\/i><\/span> demonstrative adjective ‘<\/i><\/span>quel<\/i><\/span><\/strong>‘, e.g. <\/i><\/span>quel tavolo<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/span> (that table)<\/span>
\n<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

lo<\/span><\/strong> = masculine singular, used before \u2018<\/span>s<\/span><\/strong>\u2019 plus a consonant, \u2018<\/span>z<\/span><\/strong>\u2019, or a vowel, e.g.<\/span> lo <\/span><\/strong>specchio<\/span><\/strong>,<\/span> lo z<\/span><\/strong>aino<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span>N.B.<\/i><\/span> lo<\/i><\/span><\/strong> becomes<\/i><\/span> l\u2019 <\/i><\/span><\/strong>before a vowel, e.g.<\/i><\/span> l’albero<\/i><\/span><\/strong>.

la<\/span><\/strong> = feminine singular, e.g. <\/span>la <\/span><\/strong>sedia<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/i>N.B. <\/i><\/span>la<\/i><\/span><\/strong> becomes <\/i><\/span>l\u2019<\/i><\/span><\/strong> before a vowel, e.g. <\/i><\/span>l’<\/i><\/span><\/strong>arancia<\/i><\/span><\/strong>.
\nCorresponding demonstrative adjective ‘quella<\/strong>‘, e.g. quella sedia<\/b><\/strong> (that chair), or before a vowel<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/i>quell’<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/span>, e.g. quell’arancia<\/strong> (that orange).<\/span>
