L’anno seguente la mamma dei tre gattini, Gigia, Smokie e Bella, soddisfatta del risultato, si ripresent\u00f2 a casa nostra, questa volta mentre era ancora incinta. Decidemmo di nutrirla, sperando che in questo modo i nuovi gattini nascessero pi\u00f9 sani e robusti, e a questo punto le demmo un nome: Jennifer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The following year Gigia, Smokie and Bella’s mother, satisfied with the result (of having housed her three kittens), turned up again at our house, this time while she was still pregnant. We decided to feed her in the hope that the new kittens would be born healthier and stronger, and at this point we gave her a name: Jennifer.<\/p>\n

Una mattina di met\u00e0 aprile per\u00f2 Jennifer non era sulla finestra della cucina come al solito. Uscii fuori a chiamarla, e sentii un flebile miagolio provenire dalla piccola casetta in legno accanto alla porta che Geoff aveva costruito come riparo per i nostri ormai numerosi gatti e visitatori. Mi inginocchiai a guardare dentro e vidi Jennifer con un groviglio di cosine pelose. Tutta emozionata chiamai Geoff: c’erano 5 gattini, ma uno purtroppo era nato morto.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One morning in mid April, however, Jennifer wasn’t in her usual place on the window sill. I went out to call her, and heard a weak mewing coming from the little wooden house which Geoff had built next to the door to shelter our now numerous cats and visitors. I knelt down to look inside and saw Jennifer with a tangle of little furry things. All excited, I called Geoff: there were five kittens, but unfortunately one was stillborn.<\/p>\n

Da quel giorno cominci\u00f2 la nuova avventura: quando i gattini iniziarono a camminare un poco, non appena aprivamo la porta uno tsunami miagolante si rovesciava all’interno e correva a giocare sotto i mobili della cucina. Smokie e Coc\u00f2 si dimostrarono subito interessati a questo gioco, mentre le femmine, in particolare Mim\u00ec e Gigia, si rivelarono insofferenti verso gli intrusi.<\/strong><\/p>\n

From that day on, the new adventure began: when the kittens began to walk a little, a mewing tsunami would pour in as soon as we opened the door, and run to play under the kitchen cupboards. Smokie and Coc\u00f2 immediately proved to be interested in this game, whilst the females, in particular Mim\u00ec and Gigia, showed themselves to be intolerant towards the intruders.<\/p>\n

Jennifer continu\u00f2 imperterrita la sua manovra di insediamento: se io mi sedevo per terra a giocare coi gattini, lei veniva subito ad accoccolarsi su di me, poi chiamava i figli e li allattava l\u00ec, in grembo a me! Come fare a resisterle? Riuscimmo a trovare casa a tutti e quattro i micini e con l’aiuto di un’amica gattara facemmo sterilizzare Jennifer al canile municipale. Finalmente in pensione dalle responsabilit\u00e0 materne, Jennifer si stabil\u00ec permanentemente in casa nostra e divenne una gatta estremamente casalinga e affettuosa.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jennifer, undeterred, continued her installation manoeuvre: if I sat on the floor to play with the kittens she immediately came and cuddled up on me, then she called her kittens and fed them there, right on my lap! How can one resist? We managed to house all four kittens, and with the help of a friend who cares for cats we had Jennifer sterilised at the municipal kennels. Finally retired from her maternal responsibilities, Jennifer permanently established herself in our house and became an extremely homely and affectionate cat.<\/p>\n

Ambra da piccolina. Ho scoperto subito che dovevo portare i guanti ‘anti-artigli’!<\/strong> Ambra when she was little. I quickly discovered that I had to wear ‘claw proof’ gloves!

L’arrivo pi\u00f9 drammatico fu certamente quello di Ambra! Fece il suo ingresso due anni e mezzo fa, in un pomeriggio di inizio settembre, racchiusa nelle mani protettive di Geoff, che l’aveva trovata sull’orto. Era piccolissima, aveva solo pochi giorni, era sporca, ricoperta di larve di mosca e affamata, ma sana e piena di vitalit\u00e0. La pulimmo e le demmo del latte caldo con l’aiuto di una pipetta, poi sull’internet trovai una ricetta per latte per gattini da preparare in casa.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Definitely the most dramatic arrival was that of Ambra! She made her entrance one afternoon in mid September two and a half years ago, enclosed in the protective hands of Geoff, who had found her in the vegetable garden. She was tiny, only a few days old, dirty, covered in fly larvae, hungry, but healthy and full of life. We cleaned her and gave her some warm milk with the aid of a pipette, then I found a recipe\u00a0on the internet for a home-made kitten milk.<\/p>\n

Con Ambra imparammo a fare i genitori: dovevamo alzarci durante la notte per allattarla, le massaggiavamo la pancina per farla digerire e stimolarle la vescica, controllavamo che facesse la pop\u00f2, la rassicuravamo, la facevamo giocare, e cos\u00ec via.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We learned how to be parents with Ambra: we had to get up during the night to feed milk to her, we massaged her tummy to help her digest and stimulate her bladder, we checked that she did her ‘pooh pooh’, we reassured her, we got her playing, and so on.<\/p>\n

Nello stesso periodo in paese apparve un gattino tutto nero dal pelo lungo: sospettammo subito che fosse il fratellino di Ambra. Quando sua mamma, una gatta randagia del paese, cominci\u00f2 ad allontanarlo, lui cerc\u00f2 la compagnia umana non solo per il cibo, ma anche, cosa rara per i gatti del paese, per le coccole. Io mi raccomandavo con Geoff di non abituarlo a mangiare da noi perch\u00e9 avevamo gi\u00e0 sette gatti: bastavano ed avanzavano.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the same period a long haired black kitten appeared in the village: we immediately suspected that he was Ambra’s brother. When his mother, a stray village cat, began to distance herself from him, he looked for human company, not just for food but also, unusually for a village cat, for cuddles. I begged Geoff not to get him used to eating at our house because we already had seven cats: more than enough.<\/p>\n

Tuttavia, un pomeriggio ero nella cascina a prendere della legna per il caminetto e lui arriv\u00f2 di corsa e cominci\u00f2 a strusciarsi contro le mie gambe. Lo sollevai: era leggero come una piuma, gli si sentivano tutte le costole, ma la cosa che mi colp\u00ec di pi\u00f9 fu che si mise subito a fare delle gran fusa. Faceva sempre le fusa. Anche quando lo portammo dal veterinario perch\u00e9 aveva un’infezione sulla guancia, continu\u00f2 a fare le fusa mentre il veterinario lo radeva!<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, one afternoon I was in the wood shed getting some wood for the fire and he ran up to me and began brushing against my legs. I picked him up: he was as light as a feather, you could feel all his ribs, but what struck me most was that he immediately began purring loudly. He was always purring. Even when we took him to the vet because he had an infection on his cheek he carried on purring whilst the vet shaved him!<\/p>\n

Era impossibile resistergli e dovemmo arrenderci: lo adottammo e lo chiamammo Mr.Black. Divent\u00f2 subito l’inseparabile compagno di giochi di Ambra, cosicch\u00e9 li soprannominammo ‘Il Duo Diabolico’. E’ un vero piacere vederli giocare insieme e sentire l’affetto della nostra famiglia felina.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was impossible to resist him and we had to give in: we adopted him and called him Mr. Black. He instantly became Ambra’s inseparable playmate, and so we nicknamed them ‘The Diabolical Duo’. It’s a real pleasure to watch them play together and to receive the affection of our feline family.<\/p>\n
