Rendere conto<\/strong> or rendersi conto<\/strong>? This verb changes meaning depending on whether it’s used in its active form: <\/span>rendere conto<\/b><\/span> (to report to), or its reflexive form:<\/span> rendersi conto<\/b><\/span> (to realize<\/span>, to be aware<\/span>). The reflexive form is the most commonly used in everyday language, so today we’re going to have look at its conjugation and <\/span>usage.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s start by having a look at the two main tenses: presente<\/strong> and passato prossimo<\/strong><\/p>\n

Presente:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

mi rendo conto<\/strong> (I realize)
\nti rendi conto<\/strong> (singular, informal:<\/i> you realize)
\nsi rende conto<\/strong> ( formal:<\/i> <\/i>you realize, he\/she realizes)
\nci rendiamo conto<\/strong> (we realize)
\nvi rendete conto<\/strong> (plural: <\/i>you realize)
\nsi rendono conto<\/strong> (they realize)<\/p>\n

n.b.<\/strong> the colloquial expression “ma ti rendi conto!?!”<\/strong> is used with the meaning of “can you believe it!?!” Sometimes you’ll hear it with the ‘you’ repeated for reinforcement: “ma tu ti rendi conto!?!”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Examples<\/span>:<\/span>
\nmi rendo conto che questa \u00e8 una situazione difficile<\/strong> (I realize that this is a difficult situation)
\nma ti rendi conto in che guaio ti sei messo?<\/strong> (do you realize what sort of trouble you’re in?)
\nSignor Rossi, si rende conto di qual \u00e8 il problema?<\/strong> (Mr. Rossi, do you realize what the problem is?)
\nscusate, ci rendiamo conto che questo non \u00e8 il momento opportuno<\/strong> (sorry, we realize that this is not the appropriate time)<\/p>\n

\nti sei reso\/a conto<\/strong> (singular, informal:<\/i> you realized)

\nci siamo resi\/e conto<\/strong> (we realized)
\nvi siete resi\/e conto<\/strong> (plural: <\/i>you realized)
\nsi sono resi\/e conto<\/strong> (they realized)<\/p>\n

\nLucia non si \u00e8 resa conto di aver perso le chiavi<\/strong> (Lucia didn’t realize she had lost the keys)
\nvi siete resi conto in tempo di aver sbagliato strada, bravi!<\/strong> (you realized in time that you took the wrong road, well done!)
\ni Rossi non si sono resi conto che il prezzo non comprende le spese dell’agenzia<\/strong> (the Rossis haven’t realized that the price doesn’t include the agency fees)
\nscusa, non me ne ero resa conto<\/strong> (sorry, I didn’t realize it<\/em>) n.b. ‘ne<\/strong>‘ in this construction corresponds to ‘it<\/em>‘, which would not normally be used in English.<\/p>\n

Congiuntivo:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

spero che vi rendiate conto della gravit\u00e0 della situazione<\/strong> (I hope you realize how serious the situation is)
\npensi che loro si rendano conto della situazione?<\/strong> (do you think that they are aware of situation?)
\ntemo che Lucia non si sia resa conto di aver perso le chiavi<\/strong> (I’m afraid that Lucia hasn’t realized that she’s lost the keys)
\nsiete sicuri che mamma e pap\u00e0 non se ne siano resi conto?<\/strong> (are you sure that mum and dad haven’t realized?)<\/p>\n

Imperativo:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

renditi conto della gravit\u00e0 del problema!<\/strong> (you singular: <\/i>be aware of the seriousness of the problem!)
\nrenditene conto!<\/strong> (you singular: <\/i>be aware of it!)
\nrendiamoci conto di ci\u00f2 che \u00e8 successo<\/strong> (let’s be aware of what’s happened)
\nrendiamocene conto!<\/strong> (let’s be aware of it!)
\nrendetevi conto di come sia importante l’amicizia<\/strong> (you plural:<\/i> do realize how important friendship is)
\nrendetevene conto!<\/strong> (you plural:<\/i> do realize it!)<\/p>\n
