I bar aprono la mattina presto, verso le sette, sette e mezzo e studenti e lavoratori ci vanno a fare colazione e rinfrancarsi prima di affrontare la giornata lavorativa. Quando io vado a badare mia mamma a Pontremoli, mi porto dietro il portatile per lavorare sul blog, ma poi, non avendo mia mamma l’internet, devo andare ad un internet caff\u00e8 per poter caricare gli articoli. Lo stesso \u00e8 successo venerd\u00ec scorso.<\/b><\/p>\n

Bars open early in the morning, around seven, seven thirty, and students and workers go there to have breakfast and get up courage before facing the working day. When I go to look after my mother in Pontremoli, I take my laptop with me so that I can work on the blog, but then, as my mother doesn’t have internet, I have to go to an internet caff\u00e8 to upload the articles. That’s what happened last Friday.<\/p>\n

Mi sono alzata la mattina presto e sono andata al bar delle ACLI dove si pu\u00f2 usare gratuitamente l’internet pagando solo la consumazione, ma alle otto del mattino il locale era gi\u00e0 affollato di persone. Vicino all’ingresso, in piedi al bar a prendere il caff\u00e8 e a parlare di politica e commentare le ultime notizie c’erano gli operai del comune, con le loro tute arancioni.<\/b><\/p>\n

I got up early in the morning and went to the ACLI<\/b><\/a><\/span><\/span> bar where you can use the internet for free if you buy something (coffee, a pastry etc.<\/em>), but at eight in the morning the place was already crowded. Standing at the bar near the entrance, drinking coffee, talking politics, and commenting on the latest news were the council workers, wearing their orange work outfits.<\/p>\n

Ho cercato un posto ai tavolini per poter appoggiare il mio portatile, me erano quasi tutti occupati da gruppi di studenti del vicino Liceo Classico. Sono riuscita a trovarne uno libero e mi ci sono sistemata. Ho acceso il computer, e poi sono andata ad ordinare la mia colazione: cappuccino e cornetto. Il cornetto era squisito, caldo, soffice, profumato.<\/b><\/p>\n

I looked for a table where I could put down my laptop, but they were almost all occupied by groups of students from the nearby secondary school. I managed to find one free and settled myself in there. I turned on the computer, then I went to order my breakfast: cappuccino and brioche. The brioche was exquisite, hot, light, fragrant.<\/p>\n

Al tavolino dietro di me erano sedute quattro ragazze di circa 16 anni. Una di loro stava praticando per l’interrogazione di storia e geografia. Ero affascinata e non potevo non ascoltarla. Parlava dell’Unione Europea, dalla sua fondazione coi Trattati di Roma del 1957 fino al Trattato di Schengen del 1985 che ha abbattuto le frontiere interne, e alla creazione della moneta unica, l’euro, nel 2002.<\/b><\/p>\n

At the table behind me four girls of about 16 years old were seated. One of them was practising for her oral exams in history and geography. I was fascinated, and couldn’t help listening. She spoke about the European Union, from its foundation with the Treatise of Rome in 1957 up until the Schengen Treaty of 1985 that did away with the internal frontiers, and the creation of the single currency, the Euro, in 2002.<\/p>\n

Poi \u00e8 passata ad elencare tutti i 27 Paesi dell’UE, le loro capitali e le loro economie principali! Ha avuto un momento di vuoto mentale sulla Germania: “Capitale della Germania …., capitale …” Dopo qualche secondo di silenzio esterrefatto da parte delle sue compagne, le \u00e8 tornato in mente: “Berlino!” ha esclamato con sollievo.<\/b><\/p>\n

Then she went on to list the 27 countries of the EU, their capitals, and principal economies! She had a temporary mental block about Germany: “The capital of Germany …., capital …” After a few seconds of flabbergasted silence from her companions, it came back to her: “Berlin!” she exclaimed with relief.<\/p>\n

Finito con la geografia, \u00e8 passata alla storia: dalla fine dell’Impero Romano d’Occidente nel 476 alla nascita del Sacro Romano Impero con Carlo Magno! Parlava con sicurezza e precisione, e tutto ci\u00f2 mi ha rincuorata: non \u00e8 vero che tutti i giovani sono ignoranti ed analfabeti, c’\u00e8 ancora chi studia con impegno e soddisfazione. Semmai sono i nostri politici che danno il cattivo esempio perch\u00e9 non sanno usare il congiuntivo o le ‘h’!<\/b><\/p>\n

Having finished with geography, she moved onto history: from the end of the Western Roman Empire in 476 to the birth of the Holy Roman Empire with Carlo Magno! She spoke with confidence and precision, and this reassured me: it’s not true that all young people are ignorant and illiterate, there are still those who study with commitment and satisfaction. If anything, it’s our politicians who give a bad example because they don’t know how to use the subjunctive or the ‘h’!<\/p>\n

Alle otto e mezza il bar si \u00e8 vuotato! Gli studenti a scuola, gli operai al lavoro. Ancora qualche minuto e poi sono arrivati quelli che aspettano le nove per l’apertura dei negozi e fare la spesa.<\/b><\/p>\n

At eight thirty the bar emptied! The students went to school, the workers to work. Just a few minutes later those who were waiting for the shops to open at nine to do their shopping arrived.<\/p>\n
