“Ma quello che ci aspettava non era quello che ci aspettavamo”<\/strong> (“But that which awaited us wasn’t what we expected”) wrote Geoff at the end of his post about Verona<\/a><\/span><\/strong>. Confusing? In fact, that line contains two easily confused forms:\u00a0 aspettare<\/strong> and aspettarsi<\/strong>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

So, what is the difference between them? Let’s have a look at some examples:<\/p>\n

Aspettare<\/strong> = to wait\/await<\/span><\/p>\n

aspetto il pagamento da tre mesi! =<\/strong> I’ve been waiting for the payment for three months
\naspetta un attimo!<\/strong> = wait a moment!
\nabbiamo aspettato che smettesse di piovere<\/strong> = we waited until it stopped raining
\nho aspettato l’autobus per venti minuti<\/strong> = I’ve waited for the bus for 20 minutes
\naspettatemi, sto arrivando!<\/strong> = wait for me, I’m coming!
\nLaura sta aspettando che la chiami Luisa<\/strong> = Laura is waiting for Luisa to call her
\nnon sa quello che l’aspetta<\/strong> = he doesn’t know what is awaiting him
\nio aspetterei ancora dieci minuti<\/strong> = I’d wait another ten minutes<\/p>\n

Aspettarsi<\/strong> = to expect<\/span><\/p>\n

mi aspetto il pagamento verso la fine di questa settimana <\/strong>= I’m expecting the payment towards the end of this week
\nnon si aspettavano un’accoglienza cos\u00ec affettuosa<\/strong> = they didn’t expect such a warm welcome
\nci aspettiamo che tu passi l’esame<\/strong> = we expect you to pass the exam
\ncosa ti aspettavi, che ti ringraziasse anche?<\/strong> = what did you expect, that he would actually say thank you?
\nda uno come lui c’\u00e8 da aspettarsi di tutto<\/strong> = from someone like him one can expect anything
\nle disgrazie arrivano quando meno te l’aspetti<\/strong> = misfortunes come when you least expect them
\nnon ci aspettavamo che ci fossero cos\u00ec tanti turisti a Sirmione<\/strong> = we didn’t expect that there would be so many tourists in Sirmione
\nci saremmo aspettati pi\u00f9 rispetto per una meta turistica cos\u00ec famosa!<\/strong> = we would have expected more respect for such a famous tourist attraction<\/p>\n

Aspettativa\/aspettazione<\/strong> = expectation<\/span><\/p>\n

Related to the verb aspettarsi<\/strong> are the nouns aspettativa<\/strong> and aspettazione<\/strong> (expectation):<\/p>\n

il successo della mostra ha superato ogni aspettativa<\/strong> = the success of the exhibition exceeded all expectations
\nha deluso l’aspettazione di tutti noi<\/strong> = he disappointed our expectation
\nle tue aspettative sono troppo elevate<\/strong> = your expectations are too high.<\/p>\n

N.B. aspettativa<\/strong> and aspettazione<\/strong> are interchangeable when talking about expectations, but aspettativa<\/strong> is more common. Aspettativa<\/strong> also means ‘to take leave from work’, e.g.: Gianni \u00e8 in aspettativa per motivi di salute<\/strong> = Gianni is on leave for health reasons.<\/p>\n
