{"id":13920,"date":"2017-04-26T09:30:21","date_gmt":"2017-04-26T07:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/?p=13920"},"modified":"2017-04-25T20:35:18","modified_gmt":"2017-04-25T18:35:18","slug":"toto-in-milan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/toto-in-milan\/","title":{"rendered":"Tot\u00f2 In Milan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">A few days ago was the 50th anniversary of the death of <strong>Tot\u00f2<\/strong> (<em>Napoli, 1898 &#8211; Roma, 15th April 1967<\/em>), one of Italian cinema&#8217;s greatest comedians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tot\u00f2 is the pseudonym of <b>Antonio Griffo Focas Flavio Angelo Ducas Comneno Porfiro-genito Gagliardi de Curtis di Bisanzio<\/b>. Guess why he used the nickname <strong>Tot\u00f2<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tot\u00f2 (a common abbreviation of Antonio) could make anyone laugh, whether they were a young child or a &#8216;serious&#8217; adult. He used a huge range of comic techniques and was incredibly creative with language.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">An excellent example of Tot\u00f2&#8217;s linguistic inventiveness is the famous scene with the traffic warden in <strong>Piazza del Duomo in Milano<\/strong>, from his 1956 film <b>Tot\u00f2, Peppino e la <\/b><b>M<\/b><b>alafemmina<\/b>. Here, Tot\u00f2 and Peppino (the Neapolitan actor <strong>Peppino de Filippo<\/strong>) have just arrived in Milano from Napoli in search of their nephew who has fallen in love with <strong>una malafemmina<\/strong> (a bad woman).<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is their first time in a Northern Italian city, and their sole knowledge of Milano is based on gossip that they&#8217;ve heard in Napoli! Therefore they arrive at <strong>la Stazione Centrale<\/strong> in the middle of the summer dressed as if they are going to Siberia, because they&#8217;ve been told, <strong>&#8220;a Milano fa freddo e c&#8217;\u00e8 la nebbia&#8221;<\/strong> (Milan is cold and foggy). Once there, Tot\u00f2 and Peppino must find <strong>la Malafemmina<\/strong>, who&#8217;s name is Marisa Floriani, so in Piazza del Duomo they ask <strong>un ghisa<\/strong> (<em><strong>ghisa<\/strong> is Milanese for <strong>vigile urbano<\/strong> = traffic warden<\/em>) for directions.
