At the end of each of these Italian sentences we’ve given the infinitive of the verb that needs to be conjugated in the present subjunctive<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

1.<\/span> after verbs that express hopes, needs, wishes, beliefs, worries, thoughts:<\/span><\/p>\n

let’s hope that the train will arrive on time
\nsperiamo che il treno ___ in orario (arrivare<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

do you think that Julia would like to stay for dinner?
\npensi che Giulia ___ rimanere a cena? (volere<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m afraid that there aren’t enough chairs for everybody
\nho paura che non ci ___ abbastanza sedie per tutti (essere<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

I need you to go and buy some bread
\nho bisogno che tu ___ a comprare un po’ di pane (andare)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

2.<\/span> to give polite orders with the Lei<\/strong> form:<\/span><\/p>\n

put the bag on the chair
\n___ la borsa sulla sedia (appoggiare<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

tell Rossi to call me back in an hour
\n___ a Rossi di richiamarmi fra un’ora (dire<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

don’t worry, I’ll do it

3.<\/span> after impersonal forms built with the conjunction che<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n

it’s better if you (plural) wait for the rain to stop
\n\u00e8 meglio che ___ che ___ di piovere (aspettare, smettere<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Giulia needs to be at the airport by eight o’clock
\nbisogna che Giulia ___ all’aeroporto per le otto (essere<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

it’s a pity that you have to leave early
\n\u00e8 un peccato che tu ___ andare via presto (dovere<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

4.<\/span> following conjunctions built with che<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n

we’ve changed the timetable so that everybody can participate

let’s hide before mother realizes that we’ve broken the vase
