Castello dell’Aquila a Gragnola, in Lunigiana. Arrampicato su uno sperone di roccia, controlla una vista spettacolare a 360 gradi in questo paesaggio cos\u00ec drammatico e di importante passaggio per le armate e il commercio da nord a sud.<\/strong>
\nCastello dell’Aquila (The Eagle’s Castle) in Gragnola, Lunigiana (northern Tuscany). Perched on a rocky spur, it commands a spectacular 360 degree view over this very dramatic landscape which was an important route for armies and traders moving between the north and the south.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Uno scheletro di uomo, coperto da un cumulo di terra e sassi, viene scoperto in un angolo della porcilaia del castello durante i lavori di restauro nel 2004. Chi sar\u00e0 mai?<\/strong>

Un Partigiano<\/strong> – A Partisan
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sar\u00e0 un partigiano della Seconda Guerra Mondiale? Da qui passava la Linea Gotica e questi monti sono stati teatro di molti scontri tra i Partigiani e i Nazi-Fascisti fra il 1943 e il 1945. Ancora molti partigiani mancano all’appello. Com’\u00e8 morto questo partigiano? Ucciso dai tedeschi? Oppure per una faida interna fra partigiani? E perch\u00e9 il suo corpo \u00e8 stato sepolto qui in fretta e furia?<\/strong>
\nCould it be a partisan from the Second World War? The Gothic line passed from here and these mountains were the theatre of many conflicts between the Partisans and the Nazi-Fascists between 1943 and 1945. Many partisans are still missing. How did this partisan die? Killed by the Germans? Or during an internal feud amongst partisans? And why was his body buried here so hastily?<\/p>\n

I risultati delle analisi di laboratorio rivelano per\u00f2 una sorpresa: l’esame col carbonio 14 data lo scheletro a ben 600 prima, agli inizi del 1300, in pieno Medioevo. Inoltre si scopre che l’uomo \u00e8 stato ucciso con una freccia di balestra che gli \u00e8 entrata in bocca spaccandogli i denti superiori, e si \u00e8 poi conficcata in una delle vertebre del collo, uccidendolo sul colpo. Possiamo pertanto eliminare questa ipotesi che \u00e8 stata la prima quando lo scheletro \u00e8 stato ritrovato qualche anno fa.<\/strong>
\nHowever, the results of the laboratory analysis reveal a surprise: the carbon 14 test dates the skeleton back 600 years, to the beginning of the 1300’s, right in the Middle Ages. It’s also discovered that the man was killed by a crossbow arrow, which entered his mouth breaking his top teeth, and then sticking into one of his neck vertebrae, killing him instantly. We can therefore eliminate this hypothesis, which was the first to be proposed when the skeleton was discovered a few years ago.<\/p>\n

Un Messaggero<\/strong> – A Messenger
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Il misterioso scheletro ha le gambe arcuate, segno che passa molto tempo in sella, ma ha anche una corporatura leggera, non \u00e8 abituato a portare armi e armature pesanti. E’ probabile che sia un postale o messaggero: cavalca per lunghe distanze e velocemente, senza carichi pesanti. Sta portando un messaggio importante ad un signore nemico, forse il castellano della Verrucola di Fivizzano. Viene intercettato dalle guardie del signore del Castello dell’Aquila, che gli tendono un’imboscata e lo uccidono, gli sottraggono la missiva e ne occultano il corpo.<\/strong>
\nThe mysterious skeleton has arched legs, a sign that he spends lot of time in the saddle, but he also has a light body build, he’s not used to carrying heavy weapons and armour. He’s probably a courier or messenger: he rides rapidly over long distances without any heavy loads. He’s carrying an important message to an enemy lord, perhaps the landlord of Verrucola near Fivizzano. He’s intercepted by the guards of the lord of Castello dell’Aquila, who ambush and kill him, then conceal his body.<\/p>\n

Questa \u00e8 la tesi proposta dalle guide del Castello dell’Aquila durante il tour, un po’ prosaica per la mia immaginazione, che si mette subito a lavorare. Eccovi altre due ipotesi create da me, ispirata dallo scenario suggestivo del castello:<\/strong>

Un Erede<\/strong> – An Heir
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Nella tradizione della famiglia Malaspina, a cui appartiene il Castello dell’Aquila, alla morte del padre la propriet\u00e0 non passa solo al figlio primogenito, ma viene divisa fra i vari figli. Ma la convivenza, si sa, non \u00e8 sempre facile. I due fratelli bisticciano sulla divisione del castello, ognuno dei due lo vuole tutto per s\u00e9, ognuno vuole comandare sull’altro. Gli alterchi aumentano, si fanno sempre pi\u00f9 violenti, finch\u00e9 un giorno, durante una colluttazione, uno dei due fratelli strappa una balestra dalle mani di una delle guardie l\u00ec vicino e …<\/strong>
\nIn the tradition of the Malaspina family, to which Castello dell’Aquila belongs, when the father dies the property doesn’t just go to the first-born son but is divided up amongst all the sons. But living together, as we all know, it isn’t always easy. The two brothers argue about the castle’s division, each wants to have it all to himself, each wants to rule over the other. The quarrels increase, become more and more violent, until one day, during a scuffle, one of the two brothers snatches a crossbow from a nearby guard’s hands, and …<\/p>\n

Un Amante<\/strong> – A Lover
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I signori sono spesso via per lunghi tempi impegnati in guerre contro altri signori, e le castellane, sovente parecchio pi\u00f9 giovani dei loro mariti, si ritrovano sole solette. Le tentazioni non mancano certamente, con tanti giovani stallieri e cavalieri tutt’intorno. E’ difficile resistere a quel senso di solitudine e di abbandono che ti prende specialmente alla sera. Ma al castello ci sono anche tante orecchie che sentono e tanti occhi che vedono. Qualcuno accenna qualcosa al geloso marito, che inaspettatamente fa ritorno al castello. L’amante tenta la fuga, ma su ordine del padrone una delle guardie scocca una freccia colpendo fatalmente il fedifrago.<\/strong>
\nLandlords are frequently away for long periods of time, busy fighting other lords, and the ladies of the castle, often younger than their husbands, find themselves all alone. There’s certainly no lack of temptation, with so many grooms and knights around. It’s difficult to resist that feeling of loneliness and abandonment that gets hold of you, especially in the evening. But in the castle there are many ears that hear and many eyes that see. Someone mentions something to the jealous husband, who unexpected returns to the castle. The lover tries to escape, but on the master’s order, one of the guards fires an arrow which fatally strikes the treacherous one.<\/p>\n
