Giovanna (una donna solare, chiacchierona e scherzosa<\/em>): “Chi servo?”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna (a radiant, chatty and humorous lady<\/em>): “Who’s next?”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Tocca a me! Allora … mi serve un chilo di patate”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “It’s my turn! Right … I need a kilo of potatoes”<\/p>\n

Giovanna: “Vecchie o nuove?”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna: “Old or new?”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Nuove, piccole, da fare lesse in insalata”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “New, small ones, to boil for a salad”<\/p>\n

Giovanna, mettendo le patate in un sacchetto di carta: “Ecco qui un chilo di patate piccoline. Poi?”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna, putting the potatoes in a paper bag: “Here’s a kilo of small potatoes. What else?”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Un paio di peperoni”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “A couple of sweet peppers”<\/p>\n

Giovanna: “Facciamo un misto? Uno rosso e uno giallo?”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna: “Shall we make a mixture? One red and one yellow?”<\/p>\n

Serena: “S\u00ec, un misto … li voglio abbastanza dritti per farli ripieni. Poi mi ci metti tre zucchine, sempre per i ripieni”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “Yes, a mixture … I want them to be fairly straight so I can stuff them. Then give me three courgettes for stuffing as well”<\/p>\n

Giovanna: “Queste tre vanno bene?”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna: “Are these three OK?”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Perfette. Hai anche le melanzane lunghe e sottili?”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “Perfect. Do you have any long thin aubergines?”<\/p>\n

Giovanna: “S\u00ec, eccole l\u00ec. Quante ne vuoi? Facciamo tre?”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna: “Yes, they’re over there. How many do you want? How about three?”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Benissimo. Poi prendo dell’insalata … una lattuga non troppo grande, un cetriolo sottile, quattro o cinque carote e un finocchio … \u00e8 ancora tenero?”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “Great. Then I’ll have some salad … a lettuce, not too big, a thin cucumber, four or five carrots and one Florence fennel … is it still tender?”<\/p>\n

Giovanna, frugando fra i finocchi: “S\u00ec, \u00e8 ancora tenero. Ecco qua un bel finocchio maschio panciuto da fare in insalata. Altro?”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna, rummaging amongst the fennels: “Yes, it’s still tender. Here’s a nice pot-bellied male fennel to use for salad. Anything else?”<\/p>\n

Serena: “No, con le verdure basta cos\u00ec. Passiamo alla frutta”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “No, that’s enough vegetables. Let’s do the fruit”<\/p>\n

Giovanna: “Gli odori li vuoi?” <\/strong>
\nGiovanna: “Do you want some seasoning?” N.B. odori<\/strong> are the basic vegetables<\/em>, such as celery, carrots and parsley, which are used for seasoning sauces or minestrone soup.<\/em><\/p>\n

Serena: “S\u00ec, grazie”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “Yes, thanks”<\/p>\n

Giovanna, infilando nella borsa una bella manciata di prezzemolo, un paio di gambi di sedano e un paio di carote: “Ecco qua! … passiamo al reparto frutta”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna, putting a nice handful of parsley, a couple of celery sticks and a couple of carrots in the bag: “Here you are! … let’s go to the fruit department”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Tanto per cominciare mi dai qualche banana bella matura”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “First of all give me a few ripe bananas”<\/p>\n

Giovanna: “Tieni, queste te le metto a meno perch\u00e9 sono molto mature”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna: “Have these, these are cheaper because they’re very ripe”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Ma sono troppe!”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “But they’re are too many!”<\/p>\n

Giovanna: “Ci fai la tua famosa torta di banane, no? Altro?”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna: “You can make your famous banana cake with them, can’t you? Anything else?”<\/p>\n

Serena: “I meloni sono dolci?”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “Are the melons sweet?”<\/p>\n

Giovanna: “S\u00ec, sono speciali. Da mangiare oggi o domani?”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna: “Yes, they’re special. To eat today or tomorrow?”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Oggi”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “Today”<\/p>\n

Giovanna, dopo averne odorati e tastati un paio: “Questo \u00e8 pronto da mangiare”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna, having sniffed and touched a couple of them: “This one’s ready to be eaten”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Sento un buon profumo di pesche, sono mature?”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “There’s a nice smell of peaches, are they ripe?”<\/p>\n

Giovanna: “S\u00ec, quali vuoi? Ci sono queste nostrali da 4 euro, queste da 3 e queste da 2,50 … sono un po’ piccole ma molto buone”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna: “Yes, which sort do you want? There are these local ones at 4 Euro, these at 3 Euro, and these at 2.50 Euro … they’re a bit small but very good”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Prendo queste da 2,50 … dammene quattro”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “I’ll take these at 2.50 … give me four of them”<\/p>\n

Giovanna: “Altro?”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna: “Anything else?”<\/p>\n

Serena: “No, per oggi basta cos\u00ec. Quant’\u00e8?”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “No, that’s enough for today. How much is it?”<\/p>\n

Giovanna: “Totale … 7 euro e 50. Le borse le lasci qui o le porti via?”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna: “Total … 7 Euro and 50 cents. Are you going to leave the bags here or take them with you?”<\/p>\n

Serena: “Le passo a prendere dopo. Ecco 7 euro e 50 precisi”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “I’ll come back later to get them. Here, 7 Euro and 50 cents exactly”<\/p>\n

Giovanna: “Bravissima! Le borse te le metto qui sotto. A dopo!”<\/strong>
\nGiovanna: “Well done! I’ll put the bags underneath here. See you later!”<\/p>\n

Serena: “A dopo! Buongiorno a tutti!”<\/strong>
