To round off our series on the congiuntivo<\/strong> here’s a quiz. Don’t get disheartened, the Italian subjunctive is very difficult. In fact, many Italians don’t even know how to use it!

Each section below corresponds to one of our 5 blogs on the subjunctive. Clicking on the section title will take you to the appropriate post. At the beginning of each of the sentences is a verb (e.g. Verb = telefonare:<\/strong><\/em><\/span>). This is the verb that you need to put into its appropriate subjunctive tense in order to complete the Italian phrase.<\/p>\n

1. Present Tense, Regular Verbs<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Verb<\/em><\/span> = telefonare:<\/em><\/span> Lucia vuole che le <\/strong>____ dopo le cinque<\/strong> = Lucia wants you to phone her after five o’clock
\nVerb = finire:<\/strong><\/em><\/span> Speriamo che la festa ____ presto<\/strong> = Let’s hope the party will finish early
\nVerb = servirsi<\/strong>:<\/em><\/span>____ pure, Signor Rossi<\/strong> = Help yourself, Mr. Rossi
\nVerb = riuscire<\/strong>:<\/span><\/em> E’ difficile che Mario e Giovanna ____ ad arrivare in tempo<\/strong> = it’s unlikely that Mario and Giovanna will manage to get here in time<\/p>\n

2. Present Tense, Irregular Verbs<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Verb<\/em> =<\/em><\/span> fare:<\/em> <\/span>Speriamo che non ____ troppo caldo al mare<\/strong> = Let’s hope it won’t be too hot at the seaside
\nVerb<\/em> = <\/em><\/strong>dire:<\/strong> <\/em><\/span>Bisogna che tu mi ____ a che ora arriverai<\/strong> = You need to tell me at what time you’ll arrive
\nVerb<\/em> = essere: <\/em><\/strong><\/span>Dobbiamo affrettarci affinch\u00e9 ____ tutto pronto per domani mattina<\/strong> = We have to hurry in order to get everything ready for tomorrow morning<\/p>\n

3. Perfect Tense<\/span><\/a><\/span>

Verb =<\/em><\/span> ricordarsi:<\/em><\/span> Spero che Mario _______ di comprare il pane<\/strong> = I hope Mario remembered to buy the bread
\nVerb = piacere:<\/strong><\/span><\/em> Pensi che a Lucia _______ il regalo?<\/strong> = Do you think Lucia liked the present?
\nVerb = cominciare:<\/strong><\/em> <\/span>Dubito che ____ gi\u00e0 ____ a mangiare<\/strong> = I doubt that they’ve already started eating
\nVerb = piovere:<\/strong><\/em><\/span> Sembra che qui non ______ affatto<\/strong> = It seems that it hasn’t rained here at all
\nVerb = cadere:<\/strong><\/em> <\/span>E’ probabile che le chiavi ______ dalla borse mentre pagavi<\/strong> = It’s likely that the keys fell out of the bag while you were paying
\nVerb = andare:<\/strong><\/em> <\/span>Sebbene io ______ a letto tardi, mi sono svegliata presto<\/strong> = Even though I went to bed late, I woke up early<\/p>\n

4. Imperfect Tense<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Verb = aiutare:<\/strong> <\/em><\/span>Speravo che Giulia mi ____ a preparare la cena<\/strong> = I was hoping that Giulia would help me to prepare dinner
\nVerb =<\/em><\/span> andare:<\/em><\/span> Credevamo che Mario ____ in Grecia per le vacanze<\/strong> = We thought that Mario was going to Greece for his holidays
\nVerb = girare: <\/strong><\/em><\/span>Bastava che ____ l’angolo e avreste trovato una gelateria<\/strong> = You (plural<\/em>) only needed to turn the corner and you would have found an ice-cream parlour
\nVerb = <\/span>rinunciare:<\/span> <\/strong><\/em>Non era giusto che Maria ____ alla sua solita passeggiata domenicale<\/strong> = It was unfair that Maria had to give up her usual Sunday walk
\nVerb = <\/span>piovere:<\/span> <\/strong><\/em>Abbiamo continuato a camminare bench\u00e9 ____ <\/strong>= We carried on walking even though it was raining

5. Pluperfect Tense<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Verb = partire:<\/strong><\/span> <\/em>Pensavamo che tu ____ gi\u00e0 ____ <\/strong>= We thought that you’d already left
\nVerb = <\/span>dimenticarsi:<\/span> <\/strong><\/em>Temevo che Mario ______ di comprare il pane<\/strong> = I was afraid that Mario had forgotten to buy the bread
\nVerb = andare: <\/strong><\/em><\/span>Sembrava che tutto______ secondo il piano <\/strong>= It seemed that everything had gone according to plan
\nVerb = avere:<\/strong> <\/em><\/span>Era inverosimile che Mario______ un’idea cos\u00ec originale!<\/strong> = It was extremely unlikely that Mario had had such an original idea!
