Let\u2019s take a look at some of the vocabulary which describes ways in which we use la nostra voce <\/strong>(our voice):<\/p>\n

sussurrare \/ bisbigliare<\/strong> (to whisper): Laura ha sussurrato qualcosa alla sua compagna di classe<\/strong> (Laura whispered something to her classmate), or non capisco quello che stai bisbigliando<\/strong> (I don\u2019t understand what you\u2019re whispering)<\/p>\n

mormorare \/ farfugliare<\/strong> (to mutter, or murmur): l\u2019anziano signore mormorava delle parole indistinte<\/strong> (the old man murmured some indistinct words), or smettila di farfugliare parole incompresibili!<\/strong> (stop muttering incomprehensible words!)<\/p>\n

mugugnare<\/strong> (to grumble): lui \u00e8 il tipo che mugugna sempre<\/strong> (he\u2019s the sort of person who\u2019s always grumbling)<\/p>\n

borbottare<\/strong> (to mumble): \u00e8 difficile capire quando borbotti cos\u00ec<\/strong> (it\u2019s difficult to understand when you mumble like that)<\/p>\n

balbettare<\/strong> (to stammer, or stutter): quando Pietro era nervoso aveva l\u2019abitudine di balbettare<\/strong> (Pietro had the habit of stuttering when he was nervous)<\/p>\n

parlare<\/strong> (to speak): Gianni parla correntemente cinque lingue<\/strong> (Gianni speaks five languages fluently)<\/p>\n

parlare sottovoce<\/strong> (to speak in a low voice): parla sottovoce che svegli il bambino<\/strong> (speak quietly or you\u2019ll wake the child)<\/p>\n

parlare piano<\/strong> (to speak slowly): puoi parlare pi\u00f9 piano, per favore?<\/strong> (can you speak more slowly please?)<\/p>\n

parlare ad alta voce \/ forte<\/strong> (to speak loudly): devi parlare ad alta voce \/ forte perch\u00e9 mio nonno \u00e8 sordo<\/strong> (you need to speak loudly because my grandfather is deaf)<\/p>\n

urlare \/ gridare<\/strong> (to shout, cry out, yell, etc.): i tifosi urlavano insulti all\u2019arbitro<\/strong> (the fans yelled insults at the referee), or non gridare, c\u2019ho il mal di testa!<\/strong> (don\u2019t shout, I\u2019ve got a headache!)<\/p>\n

strillare<\/strong> (to scream, screech, shriek, etc.): quando ha visto il topo Cecilia ha cominciato a strillare<\/strong> (when she saw the mouse Cecilia began screaming)<\/p>\n

frignare<\/strong> (to whine): non cominciare a frignare!<\/strong> (don’t start whining!)<\/p>\n

cantare<\/strong> (to sing): mi piace cantare<\/strong> (I like singing)<\/p>\n

canticchiare \/ canterellare <\/strong>(to hum): Annalisa canticchia sempre mentre stira i panni<\/strong> (Annalisa always hums when she does the ironing)<\/p>\n

And to finish with, what do we say when we want someone to stop using their voice?<\/p>\n

Sta\u2019 zitta!<\/strong> (be silent!), chiudi la bocca<\/strong> (shut up, or shut your mouth), chiudi il becco! <\/strong>(shut your beak!), piantala! <\/strong>(stop it!), or if we want to be polite we say: silenzio, per favore <\/strong>(silence, please).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
