Today I’m going to publish a piece written by my friend Simona, who owns La Gallina Cubista<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, an organic whole-food shop here in Pontremoli.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every week Simona publishes a newsletter advertising her products. Last week, though, she decided to do something a little different by writing about her morning out on the mountains near Pontremoli in the company of una pastora<\/strong> (a shepherdess) called Cristina.<\/p>\n

This is a lovely little story which will give you the opportunity to read somebody else’s writing style. Geoff ad I have translated it into English for you. Buona lettura!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chi poteva pensare che un\u2019afosa mattina di luglio iniziata con l\u2019insonnia mattutina potesse diventare una meravigliosa mattinata piena di emozioni, scoperte, prati e tanti esseri a quattro zampe?
\n<\/strong>Who would have thought that a sultry July morn which began with my early insomnia could turn out to be a wonderful morning full of excitement, discoveries, meadows, and lots of four legged creatures?<\/p>\n

Cristina aveva un negozio di strumenti musicali a Bologna e ha lavorato per tanto tempo nel mondo del teatro, poi un giorno la svolta: ha deciso di diventare pastora. Quindi ha cercato un posto dove poterlo fare in serenit\u00e0.
\n<\/strong>Cristina had a musical instrument\u00a0shop in Bologna, and worked for many years in the world of theatre, then one day a complete change: she decided to become a shepherdess. So she searched for a peaceful place in which to carry out her plan.<\/p>\n

Ha conosciuto Franco Piagneri Seratti dell\u2019azienda agricola di Versola e ha iniziato a lavorare con lui.<\/strong>
\n Io conosco Cristina perch\u00e9 compra da me prodotti naturali tipo il silicio e l\u2019argilla che io pensavo fossero per lei e invece sono per le sue capre!
\n<\/strong>She met Franco Piagneri Seratti from the farm in Versola, and started to work with him.
\nI know Cristina because she buys natural products from my shop, such as silica and clay, which I though were for her, but were actually for her goats!<\/p>\n

Questo \u00e8 il periodo dell\u2019alpeggio, le capre e le pecore vengono portate sui Prati di Logarghena dove l\u2019erba \u00e8 ancora verde e dove ci sono piante che fanno molto bene agli animali (e che danno quindi un formaggio molto buono).
\n<\/strong>It’s mountain pasture time, goats and sheep are taken to the Logarghena Meadows, where the grass is still green and there are plants which are very beneficial for the animals (therefore producing a very good cheese).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Penso che il suo lavoro in confronto al mio sia molto pi\u00f9 rilassante, anche solo il contatto con la natura appaga, ma questo \u00e8 solo in parte vero, perch\u00e9 Cristina mi racconta che ogni tanto l\u2019ansia ce l\u2019ha anche lei: quando qualche pecora scappa e potrebbe ferirsi, quando la notte si sveglia all\u2019improvviso pensando \u201cMora (una pecora) non \u00e8 rientrata oggi!!!\u201d, quando l\u2019asma di Anna (un’altra pecora) non passa.
\n<\/strong>I think her job must be much more relaxing than mine, being in contact with nature is in itself already rewarding, but this is only partially true because Cristina tells me that she also gets anxious every now and then: when a sheep escapes and might get hurt, when she suddenly wakes up at night thinking “Mora (a sheep) didn’t come back today!!!”, when Anna’s (another sheep) asthma doesn’t get better.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Beh, con 300 animali da seguire (contando anche i 21 cani) \u00e8 comprensibile! Insomma \u2026 a ognuno le sue ansie! Certo con questi paesaggi e questo silenzio riesce davvero difficile crederci!
\n<\/strong>Well, with 300 animals to follow (including the 21 dogs) it’s understandable! So … we all have our own anxieties! However with these landscapes and this silence I find it really difficult to believe!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Cristina mi fa scoprire il bosco di betulle dove non ero mai stata, che meraviglia!!!
\n<\/strong>Cristina leads me to a grove of Birch trees that I’d never been to before, it’s fantastic!!!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

E poi con i collaboratori che ha Cristina \u00e8 vita facile \u2026 beh, non sempre! Ve li presento:<\/strong>
\n Ferro, Pastore Apuano<\/span><\/span><\/a>, un bravo cane da pastore \u2026 se non fosse che gli piace disturbare le pecore e le capre quando mangiano.
\n<\/strong>What’s more with Cristina’s ‘co-workers’ life is easy … well, not always! let me introduce them:
\nFerro, a Pastore Apuano, a good sheepdog … if only he didn’t like to disturb sheep and goats while they’re eating.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Otto, Border Collie molto bravo a gestire le pecore \u2026 forse con qualche problema di identit\u00e0.
\n<\/strong>Otto, a Border Collie who’s very good at managing the sheep … but perhaps has an identity crisis.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

E poi c\u2019\u00e8 Peppa, altro Pastore Apuano, brava, ma solo con Cristina \u2026 diciamo che \u00e8 l\u2019unica a cui non ho dato molta confidenza.
\n<\/strong>And then there’s Peppa, another Pastore Apuano, well behaved, but only with Cristina … let’s say that she’s the only one that I didn’t really feel comfortable with.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

E poi ci sono Torquato e Zara che insieme agli altri due Pastori Maremmani girano intorno al gregge (stando anche a parecchi metri di distanza) per \u201cbonificare\u201d l\u2019area.
\n<\/strong>And then there are Torquato and Zara who, together with the other two Pastore Maremmano, wander around the flock (staying quite a few metres away) to ‘secure’ the area.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

E sono sempre loro che rimangono con il gregge nella \u201cpausa pranzo\u201d quando dopo tanto camminare e ruminare \u00e8 arrivato finalmente il momento della siesta!
\n<\/strong>And it’s they who stay with the flock during the “lunch break” when after a lot of walking and chewing the cud it’s finally time for a siesta!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2026 e per me invece il momento di scendere a valle e tornare al mio trantran, al negozio, alle beghe, allo stress quotidiano, al traffico nel centro storico … ma con nel cuore una ricchezza tutta verde che cercher\u00f2 di far durare a lungo. E per voi la certezza che i formaggi di Franco che trovate dalla Gallina Cubista sono fatti con il latte munto da animali felici e amati davvero. E poi questo \u00e8 il periodo dell\u2019anno in cui sono pi\u00f9 buoni, approfittatene!
\n<\/strong>… for me though, it’s time to go down the valley and back to my routine, the shop, the problems, the daily stress, the town centre traffic … but a wealth of green in my heart which I’ll try to make last for as long as possible. And for you, the knowledge that Franco’s cheese, which you can find in la Gallina Cubista, are made from the milk of happy, well loved animals. What’s more, this is the time of year when it’s at its best, so make the most of it!<\/p>\n
