Pensarci<\/strong> can be confusing. If you look in the dictionary you’ll find the explanation that it is a combination of the verb pensare<\/strong> (to think) and ci<\/strong> (which in this case means ‘about it\/of it’). But there’s another meaning to pensarci<\/strong> that’s not so easy to decipher …<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s begin with the easy meaning: pensarci<\/strong> = to think about\/of it.
\nThe following examples will illustrate how we use it:<\/p>\n

Dovevo portare l’ombrello, ma non ci ho pensato<\/strong> = I should have brought the umbrella but I didn’t think of it.
\nSe fossi in te ci penserei due volte prima di comprarlo<\/strong> = if I were you I’d think twice before buying it
\nOgni volta che ci penso mi fa venire i brividi<\/strong> = every time I think about it it gives me the shivers
\nLaura mi ha detto che ci pensa molto spesso<\/strong> = Laura told me that she thinks about it very often<\/p>\n

Now for the second, less easily defined meaning: pensarci<\/strong> = to sort it out\/take care of it.
\nOnce again, here are some practical examples:<\/p>\n

Non ti preoccupare, ci penso io<\/strong> = don’t worry, I’ll sort it out
\nCi pensi tu a parcheggiare la macchina?<\/strong> = will you take care of parking the car? (or simply ‘will you park the car?’)
\nChi ha pulito la stanza? Ci ha pensato Antonio<\/strong> = Who cleaned the room? Antonio sorted it out (or simply ‘Antonio did it)<\/p>\n

Him: Shall I bring the washing in love? Her: Yes please, and put it on the armchair, I’ll fold it. (I’ll take care of folding it)<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

Notice that when we use pensarci<\/strong> with the meaning of ‘to sort it out’ we also state the person who carries out the action<\/span>:<\/p>\n

ci penso io<\/span><\/strong> = I’ll sort it out\/take care of it
\nci pensi tu<\/span><\/strong> = you’ll sort it out …
\nci pensa lui\/lei<\/span><\/strong> = he\/she will sort it out …
\nci pensiamo noi<\/span><\/strong> = we’ll sort it out …
\nci pensate voi<\/span><\/strong> = you’ll sort it out (plural) …
\nci pensano loro<\/span><\/strong> = they’ll sort it out …<\/p>\n

Finally, let’s take a look at a paragraph from Serena’s recent blog Nella Piazza Del Paese<\/span><\/strong><\/a> which caused a bit of confusion:<\/p>\n

“mentre a portare un po\u2019 di sollievo dal caldo ci pensa l\u2019Ape Car<\/em> trasformata in gelateria!<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

A literal translation of this line would give us: “while to bring a bit of relief from the heat, the Ape Car transformed into an ice cream shop will sort it out”.<\/p>\n

And here’s my translation from the same blog:\u00a0 “while the Ape Car turned into an ice cream shop brings a bit of relief from the heat!<\/span>” This demonstrates that it is not always necessary to translate pensarci<\/strong> literally as it is implicit within the context and can therefore be omitted in the English version.<\/p>\n
