The most common Italian <strong>preposizioni<\/strong> are, in alphabetical order: <strong>a <\/strong>(to, at, in),<strong> con<\/strong> (with),<strong> da<\/strong> (from, by, since, to, at),<strong> di<\/strong> (of, than, about), <strong>in<\/strong> (in, inside, to, within, at), <strong>per<\/strong> (for, to, by), <strong>su<\/strong> (on, in, about),<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>tra\/fra <\/strong>(between, amongst). These nine words are called <strong>preposizioni semplici <\/strong>(simple prepositions). Some of them, when preceding the definite article \u2018the\u2019 (<strong>il, lo, la, l\u2019, i, gli, le<\/strong>), <u>always<\/u> combine together to become <strong>preposizioni articolate <\/strong>(articulated prepositions). Let\u2019s have a look at how to form them by studying some examples of their usage:<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>A <\/strong>(to, at, in):<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>a <\/strong>+ <strong>il = al <\/strong>e.g.:<strong> Mario \u00e8 andato <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">al<\/span> mare <\/strong>(Mario went <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">to the<\/span> sea)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>a + lo = allo <\/strong>e.g.: <strong>Laura si guarda <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">allo<\/span> specchio<\/strong> (Laura is looking at herself <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">in the<\/span> mirror)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>a + la = alla<\/strong> e.g.: <strong>hanno bussato <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">alla<\/span> porta<\/strong> (they have knocked <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">at the<\/span> door)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>a + l\u2019 = all\u2019<\/strong> e.g.: <strong>hanno portato Mario <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">all\u2019<\/span>ospedale<\/strong> (they\u2019ve taken Mario<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> to the<\/span> hospital)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>a + i = ai<\/strong> e.g.: <strong>hai dato da mangiare <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">ai<\/span> gatti?<\/strong> (have you fed the cats? Lit.: have you given food <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">to the<\/span> cats?)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>a + gli = agli <\/strong>e.g.:<strong> il professore ha spiegato il teorema di Pitagora <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">agli<\/span> studenti<\/strong> (the teacher explained Pythagoras&#8217;s theorem <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">to the<\/span> students)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>a + le = alle<\/strong> e.g.: <strong>stamattina mi sono alzata <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">alle<\/span> 7<\/strong> (this morning I got up <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">at <em>[the]<\/em><\/span> 7 o\u2019clock)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Con <\/strong>(with) \u2013 <u>this preposition only combines with two articles, <strong>il <\/strong>and <strong>i<\/strong><\/u>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>con + il = col<\/strong> e.g.: <strong>Mario \u00e8 uscito <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">col<\/span> cane<\/strong> (Mario went out <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">with the<\/span> dog)<\/p>\n<p><strong>con + i = coi<\/strong> e.g.: <strong>i carciofi stanno bene <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">coi<\/span> piselli<\/strong> (artichokes go well <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">with <em>[the]<\/em><\/span> peas)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Da <\/strong>(from, by, since, to, at):<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>da + il = dal <\/strong>e.g.:<strong> Mario \u00e8 andato <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">dal<\/span> dottore <\/strong>(Mario went<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> to the<\/span> doctor)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>da + lo = dallo<\/strong> e.g.: <strong>hai preso la tua sciarpa <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">dallo<\/span> zaino?<\/strong> (have you taken your scarf <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">from the<\/span> rucksack?)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>da + la = dalla<\/strong> e.g.: <strong>sono appena ritornata <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">dalla<\/span> banca<\/strong> (I\u2019ve just come back <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">from the<\/span> bank)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>da + l\u2019 = dall\u2019<\/strong> e.g.: <strong>\u00e8 <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">dall<\/span>\u2019una che non prendo un caff\u00e8<\/strong> (I haven\u2019t had a coffee <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">since <em>[the]<\/em><\/span> one o\u2019clock)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>da + i = dai<\/strong> e.g.: <strong>a Natale sono stata <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">dai<\/span> miei<\/strong> (I spent Christmas <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">at <em>[the]<\/em><\/span> my parent\u2019s <em>[house]<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>da + gli = dagli<\/strong> e.g.: <strong>Cortona \u00e8 stata fondata <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">dagli<\/span> Etruschi<\/strong> (Cortona was founded <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">by the<\/span> Etruscans)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>da + le = dalle<\/strong> e.g.: <strong>i negozi sono aperti <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">dalle<\/span> 9 a mezzogiorno e mezzo<\/strong> (the shops are open <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">from <em>[the]<\/em><\/span> 9 to half past 12)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #666699\">Find out more in <span style=\"color: #333399\"><strong><a style=\"color: #333399\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/preposizioni-articolate-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Part 2<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A preposition is a word that describes a relationship between other words in a sentence.
