In Italian, you’ll often encounter groups of words deriving from the same root which have subtly different meanings. Battere<\/strong>, sbattere<\/strong> and abbattere<\/strong> are one such group.<\/span><\/p>\n

With three words all based on the root battere<\/strong> (to beat), it can be difficult to know which to apply in a particular situation. Let’s take a look at each of them more closely to see how they differ.<\/p>\n

1. Battere <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Battere<\/strong> is equivalent to the English verb to beat or hit, and is used in many of the same ways.
\nExamples:<\/p>\n

a. Battere qualcosa o qualcuno<\/strong> = to beat something or someone:
\nLuisa ha battuto il tappeto per toglierci la polvere<\/strong> = Luisa beat the carpet to get the dust out of it.
\nBasta, non deve mai battere i cani cos\u00ec!<\/strong> = Stop it, you should never beat a dog like that!
\nIl bimbo batteva le mani con gioa<\/strong> = The child clapped his hands with joy (lit: beat his hands<\/em>)<\/p>\n

b. Vincere, sconfiggere qualcosa o qualcuno<\/strong> = to win something, defeat someone
\nPaolo ha battuto Giorgio\u00a0a briscola<\/strong> = Paolo beat Giorgio at briscola (a popular card game<\/em>)
\nSono sicuro che ti posso battere a tennis!<\/strong> = I’m sure I can beat you at tennis!<\/p>\n

c. Battere una parte del corpo contro qualcosa<\/strong> = Hit a part of ones body against something
\nAio, ho battuto il gomito contro il muro!<\/strong> = Ouch, I hit my elbow against the wall!<\/p>\n

d. Perlustrare un luogo<\/strong> = to search\/comb an area
\nLa polizia ha battuto la zona<\/strong> = The police combed the area<\/p>\n

2. Sbattere<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sbattere<\/strong> is an intensive version of battere<\/strong> which also gives a sense of repetition.
\nExamples:<\/p>\n

Bisogna sbattere le uova per al meno cinque minuti<\/strong> = The eggs need to be whisked for at least five minutes
\nE non sbattere la porta quando te ne vai!<\/strong> = And don’t slam the door when you leave!
\nIl ladro ha sbattuto la guardia contro il muro<\/strong> = The robber slammed the guard against the wall
\nIl piccolo uccello sbatteva le ali, si lev\u00f2 in aria e prese a volare<\/strong> = The little bird flapped its wings, took to the air and began to fly<\/p>\n

Sbattere<\/strong> also has a number of figurative meanings:
\nMi ha sbattuto la porta in faccia<\/strong> = He refused to help me (lit: he slammed the door in my face<\/em>)
\nNon so dove sbattere la testa!<\/strong> = I don’t know what to do! (used in desperate circumstances<\/em>)
\nLo hanno sbattuto fuori dal gruppo <\/strong>= They threw him out of the group<\/p>\n

3. Abbattere<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Abbattere<\/strong> is used when we talk about knocking, pulling or cutting something down.
\nExamples:<\/p>\n

Il vento fortissimo ha abbattuto diversi alberi<\/strong> = The very strong wind felled several trees
\nL’edificio era troppo pericolante, l’abbiamo dovuto abbattere<\/strong> = The building was too unsafe, we had to knock it down
\nLuca ha avuto una malattia che lo ha molto abbattuto<\/strong> = Luca’s had an illness that has really weakened him (pulled him down<\/em>)<\/p>\n
