At 10:30 on Friday morning, we successfully navigate our way into the centre of Parma and, leaving our car in the dark, narrow, and very expensive underground car park, emerge just a few meters from Il Palazzo della Pilotta<\/strong>, right on the edge of il centro storico<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Price s<\/em>hock number one:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

“Quattordici euro <\/b>per sei ore<\/b>??? Che cavolo??? Vabb\u00e8, ormai siamo qui”<\/b> d<\/b>ic<\/b>iam<\/b>o rassegnati.<\/b>
\n“Fourteen Euros for six hours??? What the hell??? OK, we’re here now” we say, resigned.<\/p>\n

Geoff: S\u00ec, basta lamentarci. Cosa volete visitare per prima cosa?<\/b>
\nGeoff: Yes, enough moaning. What do you want to visit first?<\/p>\n

Serena: L’<\/b>A<\/b>ntica Spezieria e il Museo dei Burattini chiudono alle<\/b> 14, mentre la Pinacoteca e il Teatro Farnese restano aperti tutto il pomeriggio.<\/b>
\nSerena: The Old Pharmacy and the Puppet Museum both close at 2 pm, but the Art Gallery and Teatro Farnese will be open all afternoon.<\/p>\n

Geoff: Okay, cominciamo dall’Antica Spezieria che, se mi ricordo bene, \u00e8 vicina al Duomo.<\/b>
\nGeoff: Okay, let’s start from the Old Pharmacy which, if I remember correctly, is near the Cathedral.<\/p>\n

However … after a few steps we see an enticing caf\u00e9 with tables outside … so …<\/span>
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Iolanda: Prima di tutto prendiamo il mio caff\u00e8 di compleanno.<\/b>
\nIolanda: First of all let’s have my birthday coffee.<\/p>\n

Geoff: E’ il tuo compleanno, oggi?
\n<\/b>Geoff: It’s your birthday, today?<\/p>\n

Iolanda: Domani!<\/strong>
\nIolanda: Tomorrow!<\/p>\n

Geoff: Va benissimo!<\/b><\/b>
\nGeoff: Great!<\/p>\n

We have a nice coffee at the bar, and we’re all set to begin the cultural bit …<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Geoff: Cosa?! <\/b>l’Antica Spezieria rimarr\u00e0 <\/b>c<\/b>hiusa ‘<\/em><\/b>p<\/b><\/em>er mancanza di personale’<\/em>. Che palle!”
\n<\/b>Geoff: What?! the old Pharmacy will remain closed ‘due to staff shortages’. What a bore!
\n<\/b><\/p>\n

An elderly American couple are trying to make sense of the notice so Geoff translates it for them, then makes a few suggestions for their visit to Parma.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

“You speak very good English”, the man compliments Geoff.<\/em><\/span>
\n “Well, I guess that’s because I’m English”, replies Geoff with a grin.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

We wander with them towards the nearby Cathedral.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

“Keep working on your English” the man jokes as they say goodbye.<\/b> “I’m trying”, replies Geoff.<\/em><\/span>
\n<\/b>
\n<\/b>“E’ pi\u00f9 bello di quanto non mi ricordassi!” esclama Geoff guardando su al soffitto affrescato del Duomo. <\/b>
\n“It’s much more beautiful than I remembered!” exclaims Geoff looking up at the frescoed Cathedral ceiling.<\/p>\n

“Wow!” dice Anthony a bocca aperta.<\/strong>
\n“Wow!” says Anthony, with his mouth wide open.<\/p>\n

We’re fortunate enough to find ourselves near a group of American tourists who are having a very informative guided tour. The guide is obviously passionate about her material.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

“Che culo! E’\u00a0 bravissima questa guida” dice Geoff agli altri<\/strong>.
\n“How lucky! She’s really good this guide” Geoff says to the others.<\/p>\n

As we leave the Cathedral, Geoff notices that the marble slabs of the floor are full of large ammonite fossils<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anthony: Guarda questo, \u00e8 fantastico!<\/strong>
\nAnthony: Look at this one, it’s fantastic!<\/p>\n

Serena: E questo qua? \u00e8 molto chiaro, si vedono tutti i segmenti.<\/strong>
\nSerena: And this one here? it’s really clear, you can see all the segments.<\/p>\n

Geoff: S\u00ec, in pratica stiamo camminando sul letto di un mare preistorico!!<\/strong>
\nGeoff: Yes, in effect we’re walking on a prehistoric sea bed!!<\/p>\n

Inspired, we leave the Cathedral, and walk across the pretty piazza to the Baptistery, a tall elegant octagonal building in pink stone. Price shock number 2:<\/span>
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Geoff: Otto euro a testa? ma sono pazzi?<\/b>
\nGeoff: Eight Euros each? are they crazy?<\/p>\n

Lasciamo perdere!<\/strong>
\nForget it!<\/p>\n

So we go to the nearby Puppet Museum, which has the splendid name of: the Puppet Castle.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

“Wow, questi burattini abitano in un castello, non in una semplice casa!” scherza Anthony.
\n<\/b>“Wow, these puppets live in a castle, not just a simple house!” jokes Anthony.<\/p>\n

Iolanda: Buongiorno, un biglietto per favore!<\/b>
\nIolanda: Good morning, one ticket please!<\/p>\n

Bigliettaia<\/b>: L’ingresso \u00e8 gratuito, ma il biglietto ve lo do lo stesso.<\/b>
\nTicket lady: The entrance is free, but I’ll give you a ticket anyway.<\/p>\n

After the crazy prices of the car park and the Baptistery we can hardly believe our ears<\/em> … Gratis!!!<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The Museum is really interesting, and we enjoy ourselves a lot, but we’ll tell you about that another time. We leave the Puppet Museum at around lunchtime.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Geoff (a Iolanda e Anthony)<\/em>: Noi ci siamo portati i panini. Voi cosa fate?<\/b>
\nGeoff (to Iolanda and Anthony)<\/em>: We brought sandwiches. What about you?<\/p>\n

Iolanda: Noi andiamo ad un bar a comprare qualcosa<\/b>.<\/b>
\nIolanda: We’ll go to a bar and buy something.<\/p>\n

Anthony, alla signora della biglietteria: C’\u00e8 un posto dove fanno panini vegani?<\/b>
\nAnthony, to the ticket lady: Is there a place where they make vegan sandwiches?<\/p>\n

B<\/b>igliett<\/b>a<\/b>ia: Panini vegani? Allora, c’\u00e8 Pepen, l\u00ec fanno di tutto, non solo vegano, ma sicuramente trover\u00e0 qualcosa.<\/b>
\nTicket lady: Vegan sandwiches? Well, there’s Pepen, they make all kinds of stuff there, not just vegan, but you’ll certainly find something.<\/p>\n

Anthony<\/b>: Pepe<\/b>n<\/b> … dov’\u00e8?<\/b>
\nAnthony: Pepen … where’s that?<\/p>\n

B<\/b>igliett<\/b>a<\/b>ia: Quando uscite dal cancello da cui siete entrati, girate a sinistra, poi all’incrocio a destra, ed \u00e8 la seconda o terza traversa sulla sinistra, in Borgo <\/b>Sant’Ambrogio.<\/b>
\nTicket lady: When you come out of the gate that you came in from, turn left, then go right at the crossroads, it’s the second or third road on your left, in Borgo Sant’Ambrogio.<\/p>\n

Iolanda, <\/b>controllando<\/b> le direzioni<\/b> sul suo iPad<\/b>: S\u00ec, l’ho trovato.<\/b>
\nIolanda, checking the direction on her iPad: Yes, I found it.<\/p>\n

B<\/b>igliett<\/b>a<\/b>ia: Ci vorranno circa dieci minuti. Ma a quest’ora sar\u00e0 <\/b>affollatissimo.<\/b>
\nTicket lady: It’ll take about ten minutes. But at this time it’ll be very crowded.<\/p>\n
