Serena: It’s really interesting, you must go there. Plus Anthony loves puppets and marionettes and knows how to move them and make them talk. At the ticket office they have a few puppets which they use for demonstration purposes. The lady showed them to us and explained how to use them. We all tried to move them but we weren’t that good. But when Anthony had a go he immediately brought them to life.

Simona: E come ha fatto?!
Simona: How did he do it?!

Serena: I don’t know, he’s got the magic touch of a puppeteer. He immediately empathised with a particular puppet called Fagiolino (green bean). It might be because he liked the very ‘vegetarian’ name. In fact Anthony asked him: ‘Are you vegan?’, and Fagiolino nodded. We were dying from laughter, even the ticket lady really enjoyed herself.

Simona: Me lo vedo Anthony che parla col burattino! … invece il Teatro Farnese vi è piaciuto?
Simona: I can picture Anthony talking to the puppet! … what about the Teatro Farnese, did you like it?

Serena: Geoff and I had already been to the Teatro Farnese a few times and we like it a lot, but this time we were really disappointed.

Simona: Perché, cos’è successo?
Simona: Why, what happened?

Serena: First of all, the access to the parterre and below the stalls was blocked because that evening there was going to be a show, Stiffelio by Verdi. What’s more, the stands were covered by some massive sheets of fabric with slogans written on them, which completely ruined the atmosphere of the place. A real obscenity! Luckily the ticket lady gave me and Geoff half-price tickets.

Simona: Che palle! However she kindly told us: ‘Let’s do this: I’ll give you half-price tickets … if they stop you, you say you’re teachers’.

Simona: Perché?
Simona: Why?

Serena: Because according to new regulations, in-service teachers are entitled to a discount.

Simona: Che culo!
Simona: What luck!

The day after la nostra gita culturale, I bumped into my friend Simona who asked me if we had a nice time in Parma.
