As we drive along the typically straight <strong>pianura<\/strong> road the majestic fortress of <strong>Torrechiara<\/strong> comes into focus like a pale ghost on the first low hills that rise up ahead of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15185\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7622.jpg\" aria-label=\"100 7622\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15185\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15185\"  alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"201\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7622.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7622.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7622-350x88.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7622-768x193.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #808080\"><em>All photos by Geoff.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\">In order to preserve the magic of the moment we decide to leave the car along the main road and approach the castle on foot. At the top of the steep road we pass through the outer walls via a fortified gate, and discover that <strong>Torrechiara<\/strong> is not just a sturdy tower, but <strong>un borgo in miniatura<\/strong> (a miniature hamlet) which clings to the fortress for protection like a cluster of baby chicks under their mother&#8217;s wing. The three short parallel streets are lined with stone building that overlook the fields of ploughed clay and rows of vines dressed in their autumnal colours.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7641.jpg\" aria-label=\"100 7641\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15172\"  alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7641.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7641.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7641-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7641-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\">From the outside <strong>Torrechiara<\/strong> is beautiful in its severe simplicity, but what will it be like within? On entering the main structure we find ourselves in a wide elegant courtyard with porticoes topped by <strong>un bel loggiato<\/strong> (a beautiful open gallery) to one side, a central well, and a wide staircase to the other.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7650-001.jpg\" aria-label=\"100 7650 001\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15173\"  alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7650-001.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7650-001.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7650-001-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7650-001-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\">We climb the stairs and as we enter the main hall we stop in our track, transfixed by the spectacle that greets us: <strong>La Sala dei Giocolieri<\/strong> (the Jugglers&#8217; Hall). Every square centimetre of its walls and ceiling are covered with fine frescoes, an intricate intertwining composition of figures, structures and symbols. Wow, we never expected this. But it&#8217;s only the beginning!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15174\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7651.jpg\" aria-label=\"100 7651\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15174\" class=\"wp-image-15174 size-full\"  alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7651.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7651.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7651-263x350.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15174\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #808080\"><em>I giocolieri.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\">We move into <strong>La Camera D&#8217;Oro <\/strong>(the Golden Bedroom), with its wood and terracotta panelled walls, and spectacular frescoed ceiling. Big French-doors open onto a beautiful loggia whose columns frame the misty landscape below. We feel like we have stepped into an enchanted fairytale land.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7656.jpg\" aria-label=\"100 7656\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15175\"  alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7656.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7656.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7656-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7656-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\">We continue, mesmerised, through rooms adorned with the most fantastical frescoes: hunters chase their prey past stylised ruined Greek temples against a backdrop of bluish mountains, forests, and tumultuous rivers. Exotic birds swirl and swoop above us.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\">We&#8217;re back into the main courtyard again and now ready to leave the castle, content, believing that the visit is over. But then we notice a previously hidden doorway in a shady corner. We find ourselves in the castle kitchen, followed by another whole series of rooms. These have lower ceilings than the upper rooms, and are frescoed in a slightly more prosaic style.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7636.jpg\" aria-label=\"100 7636\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15177\"  alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7636.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7636.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/100_7636-263x350.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"left\">Now we&#8217;re out on the grassy terrace before the lower halls. Surely this time the visit must be over, we think. But again we are mistaken. A narrow door leads to <strong>una scala a chiocciola<\/strong> (a spiral staircase), which we tentatively follow up within one of the four corner defensive towers.
