The freshly washed clothes were left stretched out on big rocks to dry in the sun. Dina remembers that<strong> \u2018i panni lavati cos\u00ec erano tutta un\u2019altra cosa\u2019<\/strong> (clothes washed in this way were really something else), and believes that the modern washing machine \u2013 <strong>la lavatrice<\/strong> \u2013 can\u2019t wash clothes as well as the old method.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Detersivi<\/strong> (detergents) and <strong>ammorbidenti<\/strong> (fabric softeners) didn\u2019t exist in those days, so people made their own soap using left over <strong>olio di oliva<\/strong> (olive oil), or <strong>grasso di maiale<\/strong> (pig fat) boiled in water with caustic soda, left to cool, and cut into small blocks. This soap was also used for personal hygiene.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Before washing <strong>la biancheria<\/strong> (the linen) with soap however,\u00a0 it was first bleached and disinfected in the following way:<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">A large terracotta container, called <strong>la\u00a0 conca<\/strong>, was filled with <strong>la biancheria<\/strong>. This was covered with <strong>un telo<\/strong> (a cloth) called<strong> il cenerone<\/strong>, on which was placed <strong>la cenere<\/strong> (ash) from the wood stove. Boiling water was poured over <strong>la cenere<\/strong> and allowed to filter through the linen inside<strong> la conca<\/strong>, exiting into a container from a spout at the base. This water was reheated and the process repeated until the the water that came out of the <strong>conca<\/strong> was the same temperature as that poured in. This indicated that all the linen had been properly <span style=\"color: #000000\">soaked<\/span> <em>(see photo below).<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/02\/Bucato-Ocram-011.jpg\" aria-label=\"Bucato Ocram 011\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1537\" style=\"border: 1px solid black\"  alt=\"\" width=\"495\" height=\"661\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/02\/Bucato-Ocram-011.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/02\/Bucato-Ocram-011.jpg 495w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/02\/Bucato-Ocram-011-262x350.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>La biancheria<\/strong> was then ready to be taken to the river or<strong> il lavatoio<\/strong> (the laundry). <strong>Il lavatoio<\/strong> in our village consisted of two large<strong> vasche<\/strong> (water troughs) under a stone arch, which were fed by <strong>una sorgente<\/strong> (a spring). This old <strong>lavatoio<\/strong>, where all the women once gathered to <strong>lavare i panni <\/strong>(wash the clothes), and exchange <strong>pettegolezzi<\/strong> (gossip), is now part of our property, and we mainly use it to store our supply of wood for the winter.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/02\/Dec-07-003.jpg\" aria-label=\"Dec 07 003\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1540\"  alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"420\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/02\/Dec-07-003.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/02\/Dec-07-003.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/02\/Dec-07-003-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/02\/Dec-07-003-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #666699\"><em>Above: Dina leads a cow down the street past the arch of the old <strong>lavatoio<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Dina doesn\u2019t, however, romanticize about the past in the way that many disillusioned city dwellers do. <strong>\u2018Le cose sono molto meglio adesso poich\u00e9 nel passato la vita era molto dura\u2019 <\/strong>(things are much better now because in the past life was really hard), says Dina.
