{"id":154,"date":"2009-07-03T08:00:47","date_gmt":"2009-07-03T12:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/?p=154"},"modified":"2009-07-03T08:00:47","modified_gmt":"2009-07-03T12:00:47","slug":"ogni","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/ogni\/","title":{"rendered":"Ogni"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\">Following\u00a0an interesting discussion that arose from my\u00a0article \u2018Talking about the time\u2019 I thought it would be useful to explore\u00a0the use of\u00a0<strong>ogni<\/strong>, a word which can occasionally cause some confusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\"><strong>Ogni<\/strong> usually means \u2018every\u2019, \u2018each\u2019, or \u2018all\u2019\u00a0and is commonly heard in the following types of phrases: <strong>ogni mattina mi alzo alle sette<\/strong> (every morning I get up at seven o\u2019clock), <strong>ho letto attentamente ogni singola pagina,\u00a0ma non\u00a0ci capisco niente!<\/strong>\u00a0(I\u2019ve carefully read each single page but I don&#8217;t understand anything!), <strong>ogni uomo e\u2019 mortale<\/strong> (all men are mortal), and <strong>ti auguro ogni felicita\u2019<\/strong> (I wish you all \/ every happiness). <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\">By linking <strong>ogni<\/strong> with other words we can\u00a0build up a useful vocabulary of words that begin with \u2018every\u2019 in English:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\"><strong>ogni cosa<\/strong> = everything<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\"><strong>in ogni luogo<\/strong> = everywhere<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\"><strong>ad ogni modo<\/strong> = anyhow \/ anyway<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\"><strong>ogni persona<\/strong> = everyone \/ everybody<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\"><strong>ogni volta<\/strong> = whenever<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\"><strong>di ogni giorno<\/strong> = everyday<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\">We also use the expression <strong>\u2018ogni tanto\u2019<\/strong> or <strong>\u2018una volta ogni tanto\u2019 <\/strong>to mean \u2018every now and then\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\">However, <strong>ogni<\/strong> can also mean \u2018any\u2019 e.g. <strong>Lunedi\u2019, come ogni altro giorno,\u00a0Paolo prendeva l\u2019autobus a Piazza Garibaldi<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0(Monday, like any other day, Paolo caught the bus\u00a0in Piazza Garibaldi), and this is where things can potentially get confusing because in this case \u2018any\u2019 isn\u2019t interchangeable with \u2018every\u2019. Let me explain: In Italian we can say <strong>&#8216;l\u2019autobus parte ogni quindici minuti<\/strong> (the bus departs every fifteen minutes), or <strong>la bolletta dell\u2019elettricita\u2019 va pagata ogni due mesi<\/strong> (the electricity bill has to be paid every two months \/ every other month).\u00a0However, if we try to apply this rule to the phrase \u00a0\u2018every other day\u2019, as in \u2018please water the flowers <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">every other day<\/span>\u2019, you can not use <strong>\u2018ogni altro giorno\u2019<\/strong>, which would mean \u2018any other day\u2019 as illustrated in the phrase at the beginning of this paragraph.\u00a0Instead you will need to say either\u00a0<strong>ogni due giorni \/<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>un giorno si\u2019 e\u00a0uno no<\/strong>, or <strong>a giorni alterni<\/strong>. So if you want to\u00a0ask your Italian\u00a0neighbor to water your flowers every other day whilst you\u2019re away on holiday in\u00a0Sardegna you can say: <strong>Per piacere, innaffia i fiori un giorno si\u2019 e\u00a0uno no \/ ogni due giorni \/ a giorni alterni<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following\u00a0an interesting discussion that arose from my\u00a0article \u2018Talking about the time\u2019 I thought it would be useful to explore\u00a0the use of\u00a0ogni, a word which can occasionally cause some confusion.
