Today is Saint Valentine’s Day, and as usual I’ve been trying to find a romantic poem or song for you … <\/span><\/p>\n

Now, as Italy is a very romantic country, you’d think that this would be really easy. But not so. Why? Because almost all romantic Italian songs and poems seem to be written for a tragic lost lov<\/span>e.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, Geoff and I have been happy together for twenty four years (well, we’ve almost killed each other a few times!), so I’m not interested in getting all soppy about some silly old teenage romance or, even worse, a weepy requiem for a dead lover! I want something that celebrates an existing love.
\nSo, what do I do? Well, as it’s often the case, ‘chance’ comes to my aid. Recently, when I was sorting out my mother’s apartment, I found some old documents which, to me, are far more romantic than made up poems and songs. Here’s the story of two lovely compositions written by my father to my mother.<\/p>\n

Sono le otto del mattino del 3 maggio 1979, ventunesimo anniversario di matrimonio dei miei genitori. Abitiamo a San Lorenzo a Vaccoli, vicino a Lucca, ma pap\u00e0 non c’\u00e8 perch\u00e9 \u00e8 dovuto rientrare a Bengasi (Libia) per lavoro.<\/p>\n

Suona il telefono. Mia mamma va a rispondere: “Pronto?”. All’altro capo del telefono c’\u00e8 una voce di donna tutta commossa: “Pronto, signora Cricorian? La chiamo dall’ufficio postale di Lucca, c’\u00e8 un telegramma per lei. E’ un telegramma di auguri da parte di suo marito. E’ bellissimo! Glielo devo leggere, perch\u00e9 \u00e8 troppo bello! …<\/p>\n

Per i 21 anni trascorsi senza rimpianti nella stima reciproca e nell’amore pi\u00f9 completo accresciuto sempre nel tempo il mio grazie alla moglie madre amica. Tuo Nicola<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

… Com’\u00e8 fortunata ad avere un marito cos\u00ec!” conclude l’impiegata dell’ufficio postale.<\/p>\n

Un paio d’ore pi\u00f9 tardi, mentre la mamma \u00e8 in cucina a preparare il pranzo, suona il campanello. La mamma va ad aprire la porta e si trova davanti il fioraio con un enorme mazzo di rose rosse.<\/p>\n

“La signora Cricorian?” chiede il fioraio. La mamma ha un attimo di esitazione, si vergogna a farsi vedere cos\u00ec, col grembiule ancora allacciato, ma poi risponde di s\u00ec. Il mazzo di rose \u00e8 accompagnato da un biglietto scritto a mano da pap\u00e0, con la sua calligrafia elegante:<\/p>\n

Chiedo perdono se non hai altro; in compenso tanto – tanto amore e comprensione, tuo Nicola.
