Getting out of one’s nice cosy bed can be tough sometimes, especially in the middle of the winter when you’re lying there listening to the wind’s icy fingers grabbing at the roof tiles and whipping the branches around …<\/span><\/p>\n

Sto cos\u00ec bene qui a letto, devo davvero alzarmi?<\/strong> = I’m really comfortable here in bed, do I really have to get up?
\nBut blogs must be written dear readers, and it’s hard to work on the computer under the bed covers! So here we are, and if I can’t remain horizontal … well I can at least write about it!<\/p>\n

The Vocabulary Of Sleepiness<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

dormire<\/strong> = to sleep
\nexamples:
\nhai dormito bene?<\/strong> = did you sleep well?
\nho dormito bene\/male stanotte<\/strong> = I slept well\/badly last night
\nn.b. to say ‘last night’ in Italian we use questa notte<\/strong> or stanotte<\/strong> = this night<\/em><\/p>\n

una dormita<\/strong> = a sleep
\nexamples:
\nhai fatto una bella dormita?<\/strong> = did you have a nice sleep?
\nstanotte ho fatto una bella dormita<\/strong> = I slept really well last night<\/p>\n

addormentarsi<\/strong> = to fall asleep
\nexamples:
\nmi sono addormentato\/a<\/span> verso le dieci<\/strong> = I fell asleep at around ten
\na che ora ti sei addormentato\/a<\/span>?<\/strong> = what time did you fall asleep?
\nci siamo addormentati\/e<\/span> sul treno<\/strong> = we fell asleep on the train
\nn.b. as this is a reflexive verb, the ending must agree\u00a0with the subject in number and gender<\/em><\/p>\n

svegliarsi<\/strong> = to wake up
\nexamples:
\noggi mi sono svegliato\/a<\/span> presto<\/strong> = I woke up early today
\nhai fatto fatica a svegliarti stamattina, vero?<\/strong> = you struggled to wake up this morning, didn’t you?
\nci siamo svegliati\/e<\/span> quando il treno \u00e8 arrivato a Firenze<\/strong> = we woke up when the train got to Firenze
\nn.b. as this is a reflexive verb, the ending must agree\u00a0with the subject in number and gender<\/em><\/p>\n

sbadigliare<\/strong> = to yawn
\nexamples:
\nnon riesco a smettere di sbadigliare!<\/strong> = I can’t stop yawning!
\nho notato che sbadigliavi durante lo spettacolo<\/strong> = I noticed that you were yawning during the show<\/p>\n

russare<\/strong> = to snore
\nexamples:
\nnon sono riuscito\/a<\/span> a dormire perch\u00e9 russavi forte tutta la notte!<\/strong> = I couldn’t sleep because you were snoring loudly all night!<\/p>\n

A Few Useful Expressions<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

essere in dormiveglia<\/strong> = to be half asleep
\nexamples:
\nsono stato\/a in dormiveglia per tutto il viaggio<\/strong> = I’ve been half asleep for the whole trip<\/p>\n

dormire come un ghiro<\/strong> = to sleep like a dormouse
\nero molto stanco, ho dormito come un ghiro!<\/strong> = I was really tired, I slept like a dormouse<\/p>\n

essere stanco\/a\/i\/e<\/span> morto\/a\/i\/e<\/span><\/strong> = to be dead tired
\nvado a letto, sono stanco morto!<\/strong> = I’m going to bed, I’m dead tired!
\nN.B. remember to adjust the ending according to the gender and number of the subject.<\/em><\/p>\n

fare una pennichella<\/strong> or fare un pisolino<\/strong> or schiacciare un pisolino<\/strong> = to have a nap<\/p>\n
