Outside there’s a strong wind howling and whirling the snow around. According to the news, this wind comes from Siberia and is called ‘burian’. They say that it will bring even colder temperatures in the next few days.<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspired by the weather, I searched the Internet for a poem describing the wind, and finally found what I was looking for.\u00a0 Il Vento<\/strong> (The Wind) is a beautiful poem written by Ada Negri<\/strong> (1870-1945), the first woman to be elected as a member of the Accademia d’Italia<\/strong>. The poem appears to be simple, but the more I read it the more I appreciate it, continuing to discover new gems which had previously been hidden to me.<\/p>\n

In five short stanzas Ada Negri<\/strong> describes “l’eterno cammino del vento”<\/strong> (the eternal journey of the wind) that blows incessantly yet changes in nature through the course of the seasons. In the spring the wind is ” una mite carezza gentile e tiepida”<\/strong> (a soft gentle, warm caress); in the summer it becomes “un vasto respiro”<\/strong> (a vast breath) that plays with the sea; in the autumn it turns into “una mano che afferra e strappa”<\/strong> (a hand that grasps and tears); in the winter it finally mutates into “un gelido soffio”<\/strong> (a frosty gust) which freezes rivers and springs.<\/p>\n

In my opinion, it’s Ada Negri<\/strong>‘s ability to say things in an apparently simple way, without ever becoming banal, that makes her such a great poetess.<\/p>\n

\n<\/em>and warm, playing<\/em>

E’ vasto respiro
\nlanciato sull\u2019onda
\nche spinge la vela
\nin corsa gioconda.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/td>\n		\n

It’s a vast breath
\nlaunched on the wave
\nthat pushes the sail
\nin a happy run.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

E\u2019 mano che afferra
\ncon dita spiegate
\ne all\u2019albero strappa
\nle foglie dorate.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/td>\n		\n

It’s a hand that grasps
\nwith fingers spread
\nand tears from the tree
\nthe golden leaves.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

E\u2019 gelido soffio
\nche scende dai monti
\ne in ghiaccio tramuta
\ni rivi e le fonti.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/td>\n		\n

It’s a frosty gust
\nthat descends from the mountains
\nand transforms into ice
\nthe streams and the springs.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Cos\u00ec, senza posa,
\nor rapido or lento
\nsi svolge l\u2019eterno
\ncammino del vento.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/td>\n		\n

In this way, without a rest,
\nnow fast now slow
\nthe eternal journey
\nof the wind unfolds.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
